Words to describe sounds...

Post by Moustache_Bash »

can be hard to make sense (for me at least), but I want to ask you guys a question. And ya'll can answer it however you interpret it.

What effects would you use to make an electric guitar sound guttural, and like gnarly heavy industrial machinery?

No B.S. here, but it can be a Squire a DS-1 and a Practice Amp...

Depends on how you play it, how you record it, and how you live it...

Heavy Distortion (http://www.youtube.com/user/xtimehascomex).
Maybe some reverb (pre &/or post distortion).
Bowing with distortion also sound pretty bad-ass.
Hit your guitar with metal objects.

Also, I'm just gonna leave this here: http://benfrost.bandcamp.com/album/by-the-throat

Gutteral, gnarly, industrial ...

First thought is a ZVEX Machine. Just an awful, ugly sounding distortion. Mid-Fi Demo Tape Fuzz? Maybe a cheap metal distortion, like one of the Boss ones, or the DOD Death Metal or Thrash Master. Sometimes a Rat can sound really ugly and gutteral. :idk:

Heavy gated fuzz (Gnomeratron or a Rainger Son of Freakenstein) followed by an EQD Hummingbird trem cranked on its fastest setting. The trem adds an EVIL quasi-ringmod on top of the already evil fuzz. It's no joke.

I was gonna say something like this.

Definitely something with an LFO to make the rhythms of machines.

Also, definitely some type of filter to get those throaty speech sounds. Maybe even two filters.

And, of course, some really huge heavy fuzz.

Then there's this:
