Tone Reaper versions

Are all the tone reapers the same regardless of cosmetic differences?

i had a purple tone reaper from the 1st five protos and a salmon pink small box and they both sounded the same from what my ears remember. i think that the big box with the jacks on top might have different transistors? :idk:

Hmm I own the red sparkly version with the big knobs (the one jet city reviewed I think). Judging from the demos online I don't hear a difference.

I had a Sparkly one and then I had a smaller MXR non-sparkle and I think they sounded the same for the most part. I think the sparkly one MIGHT have had a touch more gain

I own a double-digit "big box' and a brand-new triple, had an early small box prior: can't really hear a difference between 'em. For what it's worth, the newest one is on my board and it fucking kills.

I've never had one but think I remember the earlier big boxes using PNP germanium transistors (don't they have the non-daisy chain restriction?) where I thought the newest one was a ge/si hybrid? Dude trying to sell me one last year told me all kinds of stories, so I may be confusing things. Be great for someone who has both versions to give us some clips :poke:

Either way, the newest version absolutely SLAYS. It's been my main fuzz tone for the last several months...a few weeks ago I took a slew of dirt to track some rhythm guitars for our new recording, and not 10 minutes went by before the rest went back into a pile.

And if you've seen the new EQD website, the new Reaper color scheme is so f@cking hawt!!!

I'm psyched to put mine through the motions, I just bought a reaper off a fellow ILFer :thumb:

I've used a hoof fuzz for awhile as my main fuzz with a dirt transmitter (such an amazing pedal) for a different flavor. but after reading up on the reaper and hearing all the clips i think it may be more up my alley.

I have both Hoof and Reaper already, but the HoofReaper does have the added octave-up switch...probably makes that choice a little better than my trying to justify another Reaper just b/c the color scheme's slick...

The first version in the big box uses all germanium PNP transistors. All other versions use a combo of silicon and germanium transistors with a negative ground. I think there is a difference in sound between the 3 ge transistor version and the current version but it's very minimal. And I agree, the red on black is the best color scheme yet :) Thanks!

I have an old Tone Reaper big box red ... Can I put it in chain with other FXs ? I usually "feed" it with 9 volt battery ...
