Pedals that have Grown on You!

Post by fungalattack »

Are there any pedals in your arsenal that didn't quite jive with you on first hearing/sight? but than you started playing around and tweaking knobs in the wee hours of the night and such and you started truly appreciating the sounds emanating from you speaker cones. Or alternatively, are there any pedals you loved at first but then started hating?

DarkGlass B3K OD. I got one and was underwhelmed. Got rid of it. I changed a lot of my set-up, tried one again and LOVE IT!

I think beyond the normal first hour of "Maybe I shouldn't have bought this", I would say the Pharaoh at first didn't jive with me. I guess I was expecting more fuzz out of it (as I do with every fuzz pedal). But now I've learned how to incorporate it with my other effects.

Rat, and SMMH. Never liked the controls or the tone suck of the SMMH. But it really does offer some really unique sounds that I can look past the differences.

ALGAL BLOOM... Even though I knew I loved it before I even got it; the longer I've had it and the more I play it the MOAR I LURV IT!!! Also I got the Frazz Dazz in a mix up and was kinda meh at first I really dig the ol purple robot now, it fits in between a lot of pedals real well...

I was also a bit underwhelmed by the pharaoh upon first exposure but now I appreciated for a low-gain fuzzy to help my palm muted chuggies really cut through and be felt in the chest area. I still need a high gain wall of fuzz after it to satiate my need for fuzz and a lot of it. Also it has taken me a couple weeks to fully appreciate the greatness of the fuck od. Now i am truly in love with it! Also, I really really want to try an algal bloooooom!

I have a Fuck on the way (finally) and I love the Pharaoh for the low gain side of it too... Get a Huger or maybe Ab-Synth or that new Great Wall for high gain fuzz wall hijinks... The Algal can do big especially after stuff but it really excels at the open airy wide fuzz that is so awesome... I've got em all and they all play nice together... Frazz > Pharaoh > Bass Bloom > Huger is INSANE...

I have the Huger and I love it! My first fuzz pedal so it holds a sentimental value to me. I almost considered trading it to get an Algal bloom but the Huger does noisey-rock so perfectly. So instead of getting the AB, I got the pharaoh for my lower gain fuzz and so far it is working out nicely! I love putting the huger at the end of my chain for noisey solo mayhem! but the fuck od truly makes every pedal sound better! i never considered playing just overdriven but it is so gritty and crunchy that it inspires to play almost clean (shudder) ;)

DOD 640 Flanger. Has become my go to flange. Amazing amount of impact/control over the signale chain - guitar or synth. Wide range of lush sounds. Cheap as well - can usually find one on the bay for around 100 bucks

Snazzy FX Mini Ark: At first I just couldn't find a way to incorporate it into my sound. Now with some delay, reverb and ring mod it's spacey, spooky and thick as hell. Also the bitcrushed fuzz mode is awesome. Still getting the hang of using the drone on it.

I used to love using a Tubescreamer-style drive on my board, but in the last few months it just seems so uninspiring. That may change again one day, but for now it is staying out of the chain. Fuzz has ruined my enjoyment of low gain pedals.

Rat. Mine is 91 or 92 big box "Vintage Rat," purchased new back than. The honeymoon wore off and it was just kind of around for years. Took me years to really start to get it.

I loved the algal bloom when I first got it, but then I didn't like it that much for a while. Not sure if I changed how I was using it or just suddenly noticed it was awesome, but now I totally love it again. I don't think I've ever bought something and not liked it that much straight away, I get crazy honeymoon love for everything (and only buy things I'm fairly sure I'll like), but a few things I stop liking as much later on and maybe this happens.
