Dunlop DC Brick Cable Broke Replacement Options?

Post by Humandrivein »

So I had a show this past friday night go to plug in my pedal board and nothing powers up. Assumed it was a bad extension cord or power strip but still nothing after trying those. Would've been screwed if a buddy didn't have a 9 volt adaptor on hand to lend me. Does anyone know of what power adaptor I can use to replace this without frying my pedals or power supply. Every 9 volt supply I am finding online only powers 200ma to 500ma it seems and I am at a loss. I am waiting for Dunlop to hopefully answer back about buying a replacement cable or two from them but if worse comes to worse I would like to start searching elsewhere. I am not very electronic tech savy so I apologize in advance if this was a blatantly obvious fix.

If you are talking about the main adapter that plugs into the wall and
connects to the "Brick" I think that is 18V and 1A. It should say what it
is right on the back. You could probably just replace it with any brand
of the same spec. and be fine. :idk:

Ebay kinda worries me just when I see a couple of shitty reviews on someone. I found this casio adaptor http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 7000000000 and the specs are pretty similar Im not running any 18 volt pedals so would the fact that its 12 volts do anything shitty to the brick itself. Again I know almost nothing about electronics so bear with me. The dunlop power cables info is
Input 100-240~,50-Hz, .5A
Output 18V ---1.A 18W

so basically the only difference is the casio is .2A and 12W is the fact that it is less in those two aspects going to do anything harmful to my gear. Id rather go through musicians friend over an ebay seller and if this could work i can probably get free shipping or something out of the deal and save some cash. Thanks for looking and responding and again sorry I dont have much knowledge about this stuff.

The brick is really just a daisy-chain power supply in a bigger enclosure..

Maybe time to upgrade to something a bit better, with isolated outputs etc?

These are all reliable, popular options:
Dunlop MC-403
Cioks DC8 or DC10
Voodoo Labs ISO5 or Pedal Power 2+

The Casio adapter you posted the link to won't work.
You need an adapter that can supply 18v and 1A for the Brick to work properly.

If you aren't using too many pedals or pedals with high MA draw a OneSpot or Godlyke might work.

ah crap. maybe i might as well go for an upgrade to voodoo labs if dunlop doesnt respond back about getting a replacement cable. i was trying to avoid spending to much cash since im pretty broke at the moment haha. Im running a DD-20, EHX Cathedral, Musket, Mantra, TU-2, and the Omnicron Tremelo. guess its time to clear out some pedals i havent used in a while. thank you for the responses before i started ordering stuff that wouldnt work.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ECB004
I just found this cable and the Dunlop site says it will work with the brick since it is 18volts with 1000ma draw 18 bucks is cheaper than the voodoo labs and I havent had any problems until now with the DC brick so hopefully this works and I can not worry so much about this haha. Thanks again!

You have hundreds of dollars worth of pedals, don't cheap out on the power!

Digital pedals (like your DD-20 and EHX Cathedral) often like to each be on their own isolated supplies, especially as they often require more mA than other pedals.

Your best option is to list the pedals you have, find out their voltage (V) and current draw (mA), then find a power supply that can meet those requirements. You should be covered by the ones I listed previously.

So for example;

Boss DD-20 - 9VDC, 200mA
EHX Cathedral - 9VDC, 200mA

Whatever supply you use has to match the voltage, and equal (or even better, exceed) the mA. So a pedal requiring 9VDC & 200mA would typically be powered from something that provides exactly 9VDC, and at least 200mA.

When making your list, ensure you take note of any weird pedals that require 12 or 18V, or that require AC not DC, and so on.

Haha I've been meaning to step up to that but the money just isnt here right now. Havent bought a new pedal in about a year even. But thank you for the breakdown about going over ma needed and isolated outpouts. This is the best reason to put some money aside each week and make the move up to the promised land of the PP2+. Thank you again for the response and hopefully ill have a new power supplied board to post pics of soon enough.

Using a 9 or a 12 volt adapter basically just makes the 18v outputs on the
right side of the DC-brick 9 or 12 volt, depending on the adapter.
It is okay to use any 9 - 18v center negative DC adapter as long as it doesn't exceed 1A.

Lets say you only have 9v DC pedals. Some of them may even need 200ma.
Then you could get a 9v 1A center negative adapter and have 375ma total through all 7 jacks in the front
and 9V power up to 625ma total through all 3 jacks on the right side
to power up those high consumption pedals like the DD-20 or EHX Cathedral.

As long as the total consumption does not exceed 1A you should be good.
Unless you need for some pedals to be isolated.
If so I recommend the Cioks DC-10.
Cioks is in my opinion the new standard for pedal power today.
Amps: Orange AD30HTC+PPC212C, Orange AD15/12, Fender Champ HW
Guitars: Fender USA Deluxe Strat, Fender USA Series Tele, Fender Baritone Special, Fender Strat MIM, Gibson SG-3, Gibson SG Classic.
Pedals: Dirt Transmitter, Bit Commander, Organizer,Talons, POG, Twosome, Manx Loaghtan, LP Kalamazoo, King of Tone, Empress Tremolo, Timeline, Hall of Fame.

If you can't get the power supplies mentioned above, get a few onespots. They are pretty noiseless (maybe temperamental with a few pedals) but are great and cheap.
