new MESHUGGAH album Koloss

Post by Bassus Sanguinis »

Chunka-Chunka Djent-Djent news.

Meshuggah Koloss album, yeah, time to do the headbang to the odd time riff salad. Preorder from Nuclear Blast US or
Nuclear Blast EU

AND here's the leaked track, titled Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion

Can't wait to see guys again soon, it's been a few years.

I could never get into obZen but I know several people who hated the band until that one came out. I thought it was kinda bland really. I fucking adore Catch 33 and especially I, although generally I stick to Chaosphere when the moment strikes. I think Catch 33 is one of the best sounding albums I've ever come across, from a production standpoint. I'm not normally into slick stuff but that one just sounds so black and fuckin' big as if coated in liquified obsidian.

Saw them open for Tool years ago. Most people hated them. Most people are silly. I think that's the only time I saw them in concert. Pretty good. I interviewed Jens Kidman years ago when I was writing for a metal zine at the time, he was a really cool dude. I remember asking about what kind of music they were into at the moment and he was really hesitant, saying "well... we don't really listen to metal" and when I quickly told him I wasn't one of those kinda metal dudes he got excited and told me to check out Squarepusher.

Oddly enough Meshuggah were sort of my gateway drug into jazz. I was playing Catch 33 for a friend, and getting all rev'd up about the unhinged nature of it all. He said "dude, this shit is straight out of jazz" and I balked, thinking "LOLZ WUT BUT I HATE JAZZ WTF" until I realized it was finally time to pick up Bitches Brew. So thanks to some Swedish odd-time weirdos now I love Miles Davis. The circle of music continues to spin...

This.

Exceeeeept when the moment strikes, I usually go for Nothing (The original, not the "remaster"), but Catch 33 and I are masterpieces IMO. Obzen was such a "business as usual" album, save for Bleed. As for the two new tracks, I'm digging this one much more than Don't Look Down. Still can't hold a flame to Catch 33 and I, but at least the production is much better than Obzen. On this one, I'm pretty sure they actually did use DAR amps instead of plug-ins.

That being said, I hate this wave of djent crap. Meshuggah knock-off riff + annoying vocals + shred = WHY?! This is coming from someone in a band that uses polymeters like most people use 4/4.

Generally speaking, I dig the idea of Meshuggah more than I do their actual output.

Gotta agree that Catch-33 and I are awesome. I've always been really partial to Closed Eye Visuals, too.

Everybody loves the Destroy/ Erase /Improve but... how about Contradictions Collapse? Am I the only one who actually likes the old Meshuggah stuff?

I'm kinda meh on them, well done just not a style I dig :idk:

My favorite is probably Nothing followed by Catch 33. I did dig Obzen as well though and this new one coming out seems to be kind of business as usual but I'll still probably listen to it fairly regularly. I really dig Meshuggah but the bands that try to imitate them... :barf:

Very possibly. The production on the old records kills it for me, but I got in to them in reverse chronology with the Nothing Reissue.

Aztec two step :thumb:

Meshuggah is probably my favourite band (if it's possible to say such a thing). I'm not listening to any of the tracks on youtube, just going to wait until the album turns up in the post and jam it at an appropriate volume on a decent stereo. I have no way of being objective about them - even if they put out total crap I would still somehow end up digging it.
