Muff variants

Post by BlindtoFaith »

Ok....you all know that I have had them all at one point. However, I keep going back to the same builder. Fuckin Blackarts Toneworks. I still get stoked everytime I hear the Pharaoh and LSTR.....even better together!!! So when I got my Sarcophagus I knew I would be content. There is something about this double beast of a doom box. Looks so cool, sounds awesome and you can switch the order with the flick of a switch. I love almost every doomy fuzz there is but I think I have met my match. I really do not see flipping this in the near future. Hahahaa. I know you do not believe it but it is true!!!.

I love the Musket. Really versatile. I would say this is the muff for people who like em but do not love em. The people who always complain about "getting lost in the mix" (uhhhhh turn the fuck up!)You can get normal sounds and super saturated no mids muff sounds. I would reccomend this to your lilttle brother as a first pedal because it would blow his mind and get him hooked. I really like the options of this fucker.

The Super Collider is really cool but there is something about it that gets under my skin. It sounds like there is an "always on" clean blend. I cannot explain it but that is what has had me sell 4 already  :picard: . I love everyting about it, the knobs, the design, the general tone. I just cannot get past the weird little clean sound it seems to have with my setup. Hopefully the beast will fair better(have on on the way!). I guess this is why so many bassists love this muffer fucker. (i adore the Centurion though).

The Manx was a muff that I was over in a day or two. Really boring.

The Ronsound 75 is a muff that I wish I kept. I really miss that one. If yo want a basic vintage true muff sound this one is the way to go. No frills and straight up kick ass. I wish I could get that one back for what I let it go for. Hahahaha. :picard: I need to stop doing that!!!!!

What do you guys think???

Pretty much swore off muffs until my friend got me to try a musket. Bought it instantly. Retains the muffy doom shit but really stands on its own. Congrats on that nice ass BAT duo :thumb:

BAT Pharaoh - versatile, dark, loud, boomy, definitely doomy
Sanford and Sonny BlueBeard Fuzz - very versatile, well voiced, most useful
Blackout Effectors Blunderbuss - rough, ballsy, grindy, not quite as versatile, but still a nice range of tones, a little splattier
Jordan Creator - huge sounding, in your face, doesn't clean up too well, rockin' wall of sound

Those are my faves, with the BlueBeard being the most versatile of the lot.

Change the .047uf feedback caps to .1uf and you'll tighten up the bass-riding-over-the fuzz/clean blend thingy.

Incidentally, I just did a Google image search for "civil war muff" and found this:

I think you should continue your quest into skreddy and stomp under foot muffs. I'd like an opinion based on what you've tried compared to those.

Supposedly the Ronsounds are fantastic though.

I am really hesitant to get into the Skreddy thing. SUF appeals to me in a great way though! I would love a Jordan Creator clone and all the other muffs he makes.

Also, I forgot the Hoof. I really liked the weightyness of this pedal. It seemed to be really chunky(in a good way). Def had a lot of ass and hair to it. After a while I started to think that it really was not the muff for me though. I would give it another try if I did not have so many damn muffs already though.

Part of me wants to jump into vintage EHX shit but I am sure I would be hooked and start spending so much money that my wife would kill me.

I think I've got around 16 right now Image
The one thing I can say is there is no perfect muff.

Just buy and flip until you find ones that work.
Don't buy into claims "sounds just like the vintage triangle/civil/rams muff (that I built for myself using a FSB schem)"
Just pick the one with the coolest graphic/name. Odds are you (and I mean everyone, not just "you") won't like it anyway.

That being said...the most consistent builder for me has been Skreddy.
He only charges a few bucks more compared to your average no-name muff cloner ($195) and he provides outstanding customer service.
I needed something done and he basically did a 4 day turnaround (that's including travel to/from, the fuzz was in my hands before the weeks end).
There are some that call me...morningstaru?
