what I'm asking is, on my lp in the mid position, if I roll off one volume all the way it turns off the guitar entirely
I'd like to think that if I roll one off the other would still be heard
wiring wise, what would I have to do in order to have it so that I can essentially blend and balance the pups w/ volume knobs?

That's normal with LPs when dialing one volume down completely (middle position) although it can be changed. Wiring diagrams can be found online.

I've never had to roll volume to zero for balance though and the pickups are completely blendable until you zero one out. Unfortunately in this case, it's assumed you'd switch to that pickup only as you're no longer blending the two. Maybe try a height adjustment first if your having issues with balance.

Same reason if one of your daisy chain plugs get connected to ground none of your pedals work.

when you blend down to zero what you're doing is shunting that pickup to ground so no signal leaves the guitar. once you've got a ground every electron is going to take that path of least resistance (no pun intended). that's the easiest way to think about passive volume controls. so to fix it you'd need to make sure no matter what you do you have some resistance at every pickup level. you could do that by placing a resistor in series with the ground lug of the pot. but then depending on value you won't be able to ever turn that pickup off.

You can also wire it like a Jazz bass-- to do that, you can just switch the two wires on the volume controls that aren't going to ground. You'll want to make sure the tone controls are wired directly to the pickups too-- 'cause if they come after the volume control, the volume control will interact with the tone control.

Basically, right now the outputs of the volume controls are wired to the wiper (middle) lug of the pot, so when you turn either one down, the output gets grounded. If you flip them, the pickup itself gets grounded instead of the output.

Both Gibson and Fender have some really stupid wiring practices sometimes.

So this may seems like a dumb/snarky question, but why are you doing this in the first place? If you want only one pup activated, why don't you just switch it into the rhythm/lead position?
