What do you think when you see a Squier?

Post by charles »

Well, long story short, the 2 basses I use were both damaged. It's going to take a little while to get them fixed up, and my band has some shows coming up soon. So, I figured I might as well just buy a new bass. Never hurt anybody, right? I don't have much of a budget, so I had to stick to entry level stuff. Since I wasn't a big fan of those cheap Ibanez basses, Squire seemed like the way to go. I found a nice model and planned on ordering it the next day (CV 50's P bass).

Anyhow, I talked to my band about it before I placed the order. They told me not to get a squier. Naturally I told them to fuck right off, but it got me thinking (damn, that story was still long). What are people going to think when they see me playing a squier? I know I shouldn't care, and people shouldn't judge, but we all have thoughts. What comes to your mind when you see someone playing a Squier?

Well, if it sounds good, I think, "Damn, that Squier sounds good! Why don't I get one of those?"

And that's pretty much it.

CV squires are usually great, I'd be stoked to see someone use one :idk:

Make them buy you a Fender decal if it really bugs em.

If it bugs them/you too much but you dig the bass, sand off the decal and slap some stickers on the body or something
make it look like a parts bass ;)

We all wear solid gold pants and play solid gold guitars. It's not really about "Image" as in "tight pants leather jackets". I'm not all that concerned about what people think, but it's rough out there. People 'not giving a fuck' has reached new heights, and I wouldn't really be all that surprised to see someone leave before hearing a band play because of their instruments.

Yeah, I've heard they're really nice. It's too bad there aren't any guitar shops in town so I can't really try anything out first.

Most people in the audience wouldn't know the difference in Fender and Squire if it punched them in the balls.
As far as your band goes, they sound like douchetards to me. :idk:

I love Squiers cause you don't have to feel bad when you rip out the pickups for new ones and then go nuts with weird designs made in house paint all over the place.

And a fucked up Squier can look much cooler than a Fender.

Where in Virginia are you from? I'm from NOVA and understand where your coming from theres alot of people up here with huge expensive rigs and $3k+ guitars and basses, i don't do much to help it with my immense live rig but at the same time i'm playing epiphones 2/3 of the time because they have the features i want at an amazing price point. It's not in what bass you play but how you play it. I remember seeing Daughters for the first time and seeing the bassist getting wicked tone out of an OLP bass, it made me gas for one even more. Plus if it was ten years ago and you bought a squier yeah i might give you the :wha?: look but their newer reissue series basses are wicked, and sound great plus their logo's look better than any MIM fender logo. If your bands not cool with you doing more with less than they've got their priorities in the wrong order. Putting on a show and having a great time is what's important, the cost of the bass your playing is not.

Don't you know? The only people who go and see bands play are people in other bands that are playing that night.

I'm way down in southwest VA. Like, a 15 minute drive from all the bordering states. I use to hate on fender (basses) quite a bit. I'd cringe every time I saw ANOTHER P-bass. I don't anymore, because I've realized what they're capable of. But, since I've had that view before, I can see how easy it is to judge somebody like that. It's not like my band is snobby or anything, both my guitarists play MIM fenders. It's just that a lot of (awful) bands around here play squiers. It's caused a bit of a stipulation on them.

Right off 81 eh? I know that neck of the woods. People are naturally judgemental, you can never change that. But if you let them get to you they win. As far as alot of horrible bands playing squiers, i've seen more shitty bands playing ibanez's and up here gibson's that their daddy's bought them. Does that mean every band that plays an ibanez sucks? nope, it makes me appreciate the ones who play the hell out of em even more.

Very fair assessment. Squier has come a long, long way.
