Low gain OD

Post by lapsteel »

Okay So I need a new overdrive unit. Something with lots of sustain on tap. I play mostly open tunnings (lap steel) so I want to hear every string ring out. I absolutely love fuzz of all kinds, but sometimes you need something a little clearer. My top choices are the following: Fairfield Babershop, Fuzzrocious Dark Driving, Dwarfcraft Internet. I am tempted by the Algal Bloom and the Rat Tail and of course the Grey Stache, but I am worried that they overlap too much with the Ab synth annd they can't give me the warmer tone I am looking for.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

The Liquid Gain Hydra is my favorite OD.
It is vintage voiced and very transparent.
There is two drive knobs... hi and low pllus a fat switch.

If you want something with more gain and versatyle, try the Dr. Scientist The Elements.

I have those two and the AB-Synth and they all sound different.

Yeah I forgot to mention, I have a 200$ price limit. Dr. Scientist product fine as it may be, is a little out of my range. Ditto to the Liquid gain stuff.

Yeah, I was lucky to find the Liquid Gain Hydra on eBay.

In this case you won't go wrong with the Fairfield Babershop.

I really, really like the Earthquaker Monarch. I tend to use it with the gain low.

I like Menatone's offerings the most for low-gain, used prices are almost always sub-$200 for the smaller units. The Howie is really thick/sustain-y, but it's difficult to track down. Wreck't also has a lot of sustain on tap.

I remember digging the Blackout Mantra as well.

but yeah, Fulldrive Mosfet :poke: it also has the ability to become a clean boost...

If you want to try your hand at building your own, the Beavis Audio Trotsky Overdrive is pretty cool
