I want the taste of phaser before I commit to buying something nicer.

grab a Whirlwind orange box.
$80 will get you a handwired vintage Phase 90.
I have an original, and the Whirlwind sounds the same without the noise.

Even cheaper than a Whirlwind, you can get a JOYO Vintage Phaser (Phase 90 Clone), decent build quality and true bypass.

You can find a phaser used (maybe new) for less than you will get someone to build you one. I got my phase 90 for $50, and sold it for $50.

True I got my Phase 90 used for $30 at GC, it was on display for three years, so basically it was mint.
