PCB drill bits

Post by LaoWiz »

Does anyone know if Fry's Electronics sells PCB drill bits? Looking for a local place while I wait on a small bear order. Have some small bits from the local hardware store, great for wire pads but not tiny component pads...

I think every good (better) hardware store should have them... at least in my area the hardware shop has them (they're not special PCB bits but small hs-s bits with 0.85mm-5mm diameter)

Don't waste your time with high speed steel (HSS) bits.
You can get thousands of holes out of carbide bits vs maybe a hundred with HSS.
At around $1 or under per bit... I use #65 for everything.

Carbide bits are more fragile that HSS. If you are hand drilling
you would be better off with HSS bits as they flex and are more
tolerant of abuse. (get a drill press!! :poke: :p )

Hs-s bits never caused any problems. They never broke.
BTW I use a drill press.

I have a drill press at the warehouse where I have my office but I ain't working out there much these days. After I get my order in I am definitely going to take a trip out to drill out the majority of these boards. I just drilled out a Gretsch Controfuzz and just need to make it through a Rat board tonight to satisfy my DIY craving tonight. One of the bits is already dull after about 30 holes! Thanks, gents...
