Sorry guys,
Technitool has a clearence section they post to, and they are pretty awesome peeps.
Yeah we have to use ROHS on some stuff, I personally hate it, not just cause it looks dull. The temperature is a problem on some surface mount things.

On a personal note I feel like the need for ROHS compliance is a bit overblown, just another thing for people to live in constant fear of.

Oh was totally kidding. That alphametals stuff is just all I have ever used. Running out of a roll now.

Whatever comes with the GGG kits, I do not like.

I have a roll of Kester K100LD and some 63/37 leaded solder, and I honestly hardly notice the difference. :idk:

I think the leaded tastes better!! the ROHS is slightly harder to work with for mass production I guess but none of our hookup pepole seem to have any issues with it.

I know this might be a deviation from the topic, but does anyone buy into silver solder having a quality benefit for cables?

I can tell you that silver wire is rubbish. everything we listen to, we listen to through copper cables and copper traces on pcb's. it makes no sense to have 2inches of silver wire in a pedal. as for the solder, I'll use anything if it shows lower resistance on the meter and has a firmer longer lasting bond.

So Lava cables attaching ends with silver solder, means nothing?

Shouldn't you have a good mechanical connection before you solder anyway?

The resistance of the solder isn't really the issue.

A lot of things have silver or gold plating for different reasons (it's less likely to tarnish than nickel or tin), and different solder alloys are likely to dissolve the plating, and that results in a brittle connection. Usually it's simple high-tin alloys that cause the most problems, but a lot of modern lead-free alloys have little bits of magic added that keep it from eating other metals.

Advertising based on resistance is pretty silly in pedals, and if you use, say, silver wire with a cheap lead free alloy (99% tin), you're probably doing more harm than good.

Anyone seen any of the stuff on the Duncans made with silver wire? They are advertising them for ridiculous prices for pickups.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/newproduct ... ickups.php

you could get many cool things with that kindof cash. Also: If the miners strikes continue and the Chinese market keeps hedging it's warehouse QTY's copper may be worth more than silver anyway.

They better come wrapped in a guitar.

As far as solder goes, I like the eutectic because I'm a little shakey.
