Anyone else here love estate sales?

Post by LaoWiz »

I live in Los Angeles and try to go to estate sales when I can. I've been to a couple that have been great for getting parts and such. Definitely need to do this more often! Went on craigslist Friday night and searched estate capacitor in the garage sale section and knew I had to go. An hour drive seemed ridiculous, and I thought, "what am I becoming?" Ended up with all the .1 and .01 ceramic caps I will ever never need. Never will buy another 100pf-400pf cap from mouser. Probably never have to buy a 1k resistor again. Will never have to strip solid core wire for bread board jumpers. If the wire works well and I like it for builds, I'll be set there. All the germanium diodes I ever need. Was hoping to find more transistors but there's probably 30 or so germaniums that are either good or not. Not a bad score for 30 bucks...

Man, I guess it depends where you live. A lot of these ads say something like he was an electronics tinkerer or Hamm radio nut. Then if there's any pictures you get a sense of what you might find. It's sad to think that one day none of this old stuff will be around. I've gotten the best switches and knobs from these sales. The quality on the older stuff seems to always be far superior. If I get around to sorting this stuff, I'd like to trade packs with other peeps for parts. I doubt I'll ever need that many ceramic .01 caps or the diodes. or the pf caps and other stuff. There are so many of those germ diodes that I hope they sound different or distinct. I bought some NOS germs from a surplus house and they sounded 100 times better than the 1N60's and 1N34's that I had that were supposedly "NOS." We'll see...

Nice score there.

Electronic Surplus stores are my favorite. We have a couple near me and I can spend hours in those places. I've found some great parts in these shops.

If you're ever in Minneapolis, go to Axeman. You will orgasm so hard your dick will explode.

Aisles of that kind of stuff and anything else you'd need to make anything. Seriously I'm certain they have everything you would need for a meth lab apart from the chemicals.

There's a good surplus store in Van Nuys, CA called All Electronics. I get most of my caps, resistors, copper clad, perf, there. Prices are pretty good. I wish they had a better transistor selection, though. Pretty bare...
