Are my ears tricking me?

Post by mutmoo »

Basically, when I use one setting on my Analogman Peppermint Fuzz through a clean amp it is loud as fuck. But, when I run it into a slightlly broken up amp (with the same setting), the signal sounds like it drops a bit.

I know there won't be an increase of volume really when going into the dirty amp, but shouldn't it atleast provide something that I can clearly tell the signal isn't dropping?

Is it just the EQ of the pedal? Are my ears tricking me? OR IS IT....SCIENCE!!!??? :idk:

From my experience a fuzz's unity gain can drastically change going into a clean amp vs. a dirty amp. Tubes or an overdrive channel can absorb the volume of the fuzz making it sound even volume even though the pedal is cranked. My fellow guitarist has to keep her Devi US at like 8 oclock volume going straight into her amp, but on my hotter set up I have to crank the volume more to get it to unity gain.

Ditto. a hair past off on my Fuzz Gun is blowing out my amp when clean. In my normal band set up I have it at about 1 o'clock to sound right and it still sounds a little "quieter" or rather more compressed and mid-rangey

Thanks guys! This kind of sucks because the volume is already maxed out on my favorite setting. :(

It depends on headroom, really :) put a clean boost after it if you miss some more volume?

Yup...you are probably maxing out the headroom, so the amp starts to sacrifice volume.
Time to get a bigger amp :p

I think I'll just go with a clean boost, any suggestions?

If the amp has no more headroom, as in the various gain stages are already saturated, a clean boost would not help. You'd just be hitting the pre-amp or power tubes even harder, not getting more volume. What kind of amp do you have? That may help us help you.

This whole issue is why I have an English Muff'n for a pre-amp. With the gain knob I can adjust how much of the fuzz's volume is absorbed going into my super clean Peavey Classic 50. It helps keep loud fuzzes tamed and quiet fuzzes boosted. The EQ section is helpful as well when I'm practicing back and forth between two bands. Instead of adjusting all my fuzz settings to keep me in the mix, I can just tune the EQ on the Muff'n and find my own place in the mix.

I use a Fender Blues Jr. with my volume at 8.5 and master wherever I need it. My favorite setting is with this breakup, so I don't know what to do really.

i've found that with my smaller amp the apparent difference between the guitar's clean volume level and the volume level with the fuzz engaged is way different depending on volume level...when the master is down around 2 or 3 the fuzz seems much louder than when the master is up around 6 or 7 even though the box settings are exactly the same, so i have to match the levels for all the fuzz to the volume level i'm going to be playing at. i can't set stuff when i'm practicing in the living room, take the board out with me, and expect the same sound.

I messed with the internal trim pot a bit, that helped a bit.

I might not even need my "clean" sound for my next project, so I can just turn the amp volume up loud enough for the fuzz. :thumb:
