NGD Squier CV Tele *PHOTOB UPDRATE*
Friends,
This isn't a TOTALLY OFFICIAL NGD thread (as I only have the neck and not the body), but I wanted to post this so's I could get some suggestions. *And I promise to jam some pics when I get it together.
I've been through a lot of different Tele build ideas lately, and all of them proved to be waaaaaaaaaaay too complicated. So I bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 500wt_1156
...a month ago for that other project (which I abandoned), and I'm going to put it on this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 500wt_1156
So what I have is a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster Custom rosewood neck (with a supposed bone nut and fret dressing and setup, which it appears to be) on a Squier Classic Vibe 50s body. I think this came together pretty well, as I had that nice neck just sitting around while I tried to gut some other guitars and was wanting to put new pickups in the damn things and all sorts of shit. The neck is going on the body and we're done (I wanted the 50s body because of the finish and because my good friend has one that is super nice).
Anyway, this isn't going to be much more than a backup/beater/knock around guitar, but I wanted to check on a few things.
1) Most importantly, I don't see any reason why the damn neck won't fit on the damn body, do you?
2) In replacing Squier pickguards, people always warn of the fact that none of them can be said to be the same, as they're all drilled differently or at least oddly. I want to get a white pickguard for this, a 5-hole vintage style... where would you recommend I get one? I'd most likely just go through Warmoth, but then again, if I can just get a basic official Fender one, I'd do that, depending on whether or not you think it would fit.
THONKS.
Yer pal,

1) they're Squier Tele parts; they should mate.
2) it's a knockaround Squier body; if the hole pattern is different, just drill different holes. nobody will know. i'd just go to the local guitar store(s) and see if i could get a bog-standard Tele guard from Allparts or something. Angela Instruments carries some Squier parts if you want to be exacting about it.

The classic vibe tele bodies are routed for a humbucker in the neck, which gives you some flexibility with switching around pickups and things.

Yeah, that's cool... I saw that on some other auctions sans electronics. It's nice to know that I'd have the option of putting a P-90 in there if I want to... though that's what got me into trouble the first time. I've got my Gibby Les Paul Special for that... gonna see how long I can just keep this byatch stock.
Thanks for the tips. If I can get a cheap pickguard from Allparts, I'll probably do that.
And like I said, I'll put pics up when I get it all together.
Thanks again, dudes!

Re: NGD Mutant Squier CV Tele - Get 'Dat Pickguard!
i swapped the pickguard on my MIM Jazz Bass and had to drill two new holes for pickguard screws. there's so much variation between US vs. Mexican and Japanese-made Fenders, Squiers made in various locations, and normal variation in plastic parts that it's rare to change a Fender pickguard in my experience without having at least to toothpick-and-shift one screw hole.

Re: NGD Mutant Squier CV Tele - Get 'Dat Pickguard!
I have a CV50 tele:
*the neck should just fit
*standard 50s tele parts should all just fit -- I put an allparts bakelite guard on mine
Basically if it fits a Fender 50s RI tele, it'll fit the CV.
Why didn't you just buy a CV though? Then trade the neck with someone wit ha CVC.
Cheaper and the same thing in the end.
I put a Warmoth neck on mine, but I think I'm going to go back to the original and put the Warmoth on another nice tele body I've got kicking around.
Those Squire necks are pretty nice.
I settled up with some Don Mare pickups in mine, but I've got some others kicking aorund -- a set of Bajas as well as a Rose bridge for an esquire.

Ha. I knew someone would ask. Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? Welp, I had originally planned to put the CV Custom neck (which is rosewood) on a Squier Custom II (which has a maple neck) and then get Lollar P-90s in it, with a new white pickguard and a white refinish on the body. Then I decided that it would be too much work for something that would be a mediocre facsimile of my favourite guitar, my LP Special with P-90s, but just not half as good. So I scrapped that whole idea but still had the neck sitting around. After getting over my original idea, I thought WELP I might as well try to throw a Tele together. So like I said, it all came together serendipitously... I decided to try to find a CV50s body and lo and behold there was one on eBay for a reasonable price and apparently mint condition. Plus (even though it's the Vintage Blonde finish) the color scheme will be exactly what I want (whitish with white pickguard and rosewood neck).
The main point here is that I know shit about building, repairing, finishing, refinishing, and installation as far as guitars, so I'm going to at least see if I can put this neck on the body... we'll see.
I probably lost a few bucks on the whole deal, but that's something I've come to accept over the 15 years I've been a musician, so whatevs. And if the guitar doesn't work out, off it goes. 'Least I've got my aforementioned LP that will never be topped or sold.
Thanks everyone for the TIPS! I'm finding on TDPRI that the Callaham 5-hole parchment pickguard works perfectly, so I'mma get one of those.

The cool thing with teles is you really don't have to. Just bolt it all together.CBA713 wrote:The main point here is that I know shit about building, repairing, finishing, refinishing, and installation as far as guitars, so I'm going to at least see if I can put this neck on the body... we'll see.
Those guys love the Callaham stuff. Pricey. But so you know, the CV50 will take any pickguard that will fit on a 50s RI tele -- that includes Warmoth, Allparts, and every other tele pickguard there is -- I put a humbucker in mine for a bit with a Warmoth guard. Fit perfectly, didnt like having the HB in there, so I pulled it. Put on an Allparts bakelite guard and that fits perfectly too. Some other Squires have odd shapes so things don't fit right, but the CV50 is identical in dimensions to the Fender.CBA713 wrote:I'm finding on TDPRI that the Callaham 5-hole parchment pickguard works perfectly, so I'mma get one of those.

Re: NGD Mutant Squier CV Tele - Get 'Dat Pickguard!
Broods,
I got my body (seriously... MY BODY
) in the mail the other day, and I have commenced putting the aforementioned neck on the aforementioned body. The neck fits pretty well, but there is still a bit of spacing between the neck and body. I know that this is probably common for Squiers, but I can kind get it there if I really hold the neck against the body while I'm screwing in the, uh, screws.
Any tips to make it a tighter fit?

There it is. Got a Callaham pickguard, ye olde parchment mother. It needs to be worked on a bit... the bridge pickup is super louder than the neck pickup, but it sounds great. Weighs less than the AmStd Tele I had a little while ago; doesn't sound as good, but it's actually pretty close. The bridge pickup sounds especially chunky. I only played it with a little overdrive from my tweed Blues Deluxe, but I'll run it through my fuzzies soon.

Thanks Crash Man. You are, by far, the superior Mega Man boss. And I love how your Crash Bombs give me just enough time to poop my pants before they explode in my face.

Looks amazing with a rosewood board.
I have a CV 50's tele, I like it as much as my Baja. I think tonally the Squier actually edges it. I only really use the baja more because it's lighter and has a chunkier neck. Both take Fuzz really well.
I might sell both and get a new CV 50's in Butterscotch, as a "best of both worlds" kind of thing.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.
