Recommend me some PUNK RAWK!

Post by StudioShutIn »

Hey guys...I've started to realize that punk is one of the few subgenres of rock music that I don't actually know much about/listen to much of...

So..any recommendations?

If this helps any, I've discovered a few that I like already:
-"Speed Kills"-era Agent Orange
-The Smithereens (not exactly punk, I guess..)
-"I fought the law and the law won"-era Clash
-"Irish" punk rock. (Dropkick Murphys)
-Rise Against
-This one is way out in left field...but, the band that did that "Dig that Groove, Baby!" song?...no clue what the band is called though :erm:

Richard Hell & the Voidoids
Black Flag
Misfits
The Damned (first album anyway..)
Dead Boys/Rocket from the Tombs
New York Dolls
Circle Jerks
Gun Club
The Cramps
STOOGES
Siouxie & the Banshees

There are so many more, just off the top of my head

Also, do yourself a huge favor and check out The Birthday Party if you haven't. Not very "straight-up punk" but great.

Start here. Self-titled, Funhouse, and Raw Power.
Then the first four Ramones albums.
Then Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady.
then maybe Misfits Walk Among Us.
this is all fun singalong punk that's a great starting point.

Good comps are always a good way to learn about bands, too.
check out the No Thanks! box set.
Maybe partying will help.

eh... personally I always like picking a album at random and buying/ordering it :thumb: this was more fun before the net/net got useful when all you had to go by was what someone said or wrote

If you like Rise Against and Dropkick Murphys I'd recommend The Flatliners.

Yep, I used to buy all kinds of books(still do, actually), read Option voraciously (remember this?), went by word of mouth, skate videos.

More than that, I used to not eat lunch so I could scour cut-out bins for records I read about in dumb record guides.
Probably no kid will ever go hungry for a record again!
Maybe partying will help.

Two things that often go overlooked (not to say they're the end-all, be-all of punk, just rarely are they suggested).

MC5

and

THE EXPLODING HEARTS

Seriously, Guitar Romantic may be my favorite album of all time. I put it in my car three years ago and it still has not left the CD player.
