Portishead is back.

Post by sev »

I don't know if there are any Portishead fans in here...but if so, this is for them.

They were one of my favorite bands of the '90s, and now they're back after a decade absence with a new record out late this month. I have a copy already, and it's much different than their old stuff.
The hiphop/triphop element is now gone. The record is weirder, and much darker than even their second album.

Here's a link to one of my favorites (so far) off the album....performed live on CurrentTV:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FDscNGdsQas
(There's even some FUZZ guitar on this track for you fuzz freaks.)

(There are 7 songs total from this program....all on YouTube)

I never took the time to get into Portishead, even though I always liked what I heard. Portishead without trip-hop, though? That would be interesting.

My sister just saw them in concert the other day, she's a big big fan.
I got a "the Big Ask" button.
And at the concert they gave out some crazy technological plastic thingies I had no idea what was when presented with it! Apparently they are called "usb wafers" and contain promo songs. They don't have a normal usb plug. Almost wish I was at the concert too, so I could have my own wafer.

Interesting song! Somehow Portishead makes me really sad, even if I have a lot of music I like that is much sadder (and does not make me sad).

swweett... I was never initially that big of a fan, simply because I had never taken the time to listen until much later in life, but that's good to hear... It seems a lot of good bands are getting back together (or going back to orig. members) lately. (like... since that last two years, anyways)

This is very cool news-I waited and waited for soooo long to hear something new and finally stopped checking for updates figuring they were done for. Glad to see they're still around.

Mr. Brooks - can this be my ol' buddy from Duluth who also moved to Minneapolis years ago?
Crazy! Nice to see you around the fuzz forum here.

I don't mean to be a hater, but I thought "Machine Gun" was pretty awful. It's made me very weary about hearing the rest of the album.

It's fine though. I always liked Massive Attack more anyway.

I se what you're getting at with the "trip hop" element gone, ie, no scratching or whatnot, but I always htought trip hop was quite a misnomer for portishead. If I were to genrefy them, it would be "Sex tunes"

Yeah, the scratching is gone.....and for the most part, the fat head-nodding beats are gone.

"Sex tunes" huh?
Well, then the new album (came out yesterday) is "sex tunes" for sex with suicidal vampire women. Shtt is pretty dark.

This thread's been dead for more than 2 years, so that may be why the links aren't working :idk: .
