Danelectro FAB mods

Post by jfrey »

So I became curious about FAB mods after seeing one in the Let's see your finished DIY projects! thread.

Anyone have more info on them? For any of the FAB series. They're so cheap I thought it might be cool to mess around with some.

Surface-mount components. PITA to mod unless you're that hardcore. I had the Overdrive and Metal. They were okay, but I used them as part of a trade.

I'm gonna rehouse my chorus as soon as parts arrive in the mail.

as far as smd goes, these are pretty mod-able since the size of the components isnt ridiculously small. theres a cool chorus mod, it gives more of a delay time.

the one stupiddreams88 did added a delay time mod. I'm just guessing that the easiest way is to mod the clock frequency. this is covered in a lot of circuit bending tutorials on the web. usually there is one good bend on the board. some people find it by trial and error. I prefer to look up the datasheet for the delay ic and whatever is connected to the clock in pin is your clock. then you can starve the clock somehow to get the clock frequency to go down. that will increase your delay time. if the delay ic has a built in clock, then you just have to figure out where to add a pot to control the delay time. like replacing a fixed resistor with a pot. or jumpering the resistor with a pot to decrease resistance. if you connect a time pin on the delay ic or the power supply for the clock to a +9v your gonna fry it. there are better tutorials on the web. just look up circuit bending or circuit bending toys.

This is for the delay. It's hard to read, but if you have the pedal in hand, it should be pretty straight forward.

the fab echo is a sick pedal on it's own.. super unique sound to it, but it really is just a locked up delay. It uses the pt2399 chip found in like a ton of echo pedals, like the montevillain. i was working on adding a delay time knob to it before i left for tour, it was really awesome but i made a mess of the enclosure, when i get back i'll figure out how to rehouse it.

Also,

i'm pretty sure the Mellowtone RE: Echo is a rehoused modded fab echo, i saw that in a thread somewhere around here...

it looks so cool.

here's the links i was using:
