Illucia: A modular codebending instrument

Post by mathias »

Codebending is the exploration of software with “patch points.” Patch points expose the inner workings of computer programs, and allow for atypical connections between things like games, music making software, office suites, etc.

illucia is a USB device with physical jacks that correspond to software patch points, which can be connected and disconnected using patch cables. Thus, illucia is a console for routing information between computer programs, and opens strange relationships across systems that don’t usually interact – it turns systems themselves into play objects.

Check out the video! http://vimeo.com/22732435

They note at the end that all the software is creative commons and runs OSC. So if you have other OSC-compatible software or hardware, you could use this with it! I'm really curious to play with some of this stuff. We have to do a hands-on performance / installation during Gallery Night in a few months, and this might be one of the audience-controllable instruments.

I'm thinking about developing some stuff that communicates over OSC, to eventually communicate with his programs when he releases them for download. (The FAQ has details on how the software communicates over OSC.) I'm a software developer, after all.. any neat ideas of mash-ups I could work with?
