sludge setup

Post by madmax1012 »

so i basically want to take my vox ac-15 into sludge territory in the likes of Kylesa, Baroness, etc. what are some pedals that would help me get that dense/heavy tone? my only dirt pedal at this point in time is a fuzzhugger algal bloom, but what else could help me out?

The Pharaoh, absolutely! The EQD Hoof and Dirt Transmitter are cool too, along with the BE Musket and Blunderbuss (never tried this one). I own a Hoof and love it but it's not very versatile for me, the Pharaoh just sounds way better at several settings, not just one or two sweet spots. It's definitely a monster fuzz, sounds fantastic.

Pharaohs are great, just for the sake of competition I'll throw in the Death by Audio Fuzz War, I love mine!

Think the Pharaoh might be more versatile though, but for my sound I prefer the Fuzz War over what I've heard from the Pharaoh.

Laura from Kylesa def. has a Blackout Musket on her board at shows. Not sure what the other dude uses.

Far as Baroness goes:

I love the EQD Tusk fuzz for sludgey sounds, but you might have a hard time finding one.

IMO, you're gonna need more than an AC15 to REALLY get that sound. That sound, to me, is a stack, played VERY loud. Pushing the speakers in the cab really hard, etc.

As long as we're getting crazy..

Emperor cab, like a 6x10 or more. Orange Thunderverb 200.

Play a baritone guitar, or even better, the Bass VI. Play through a Musket fuzz, into a EQD Tusk, into a Pharaoh. All on at once.

Hope this isn't a double post computer is being inappropriate.

I used a Z-vex mastotron and it does crazy evil things, Boss OC-2 in front of it and it just sounds rediculous.
Play into an Epi Valve JR currently so you would probably get similar results

Barones uses a Blackout Twosome if I am not mistaken.

Gonna hook Laura and Phillip up with some Pharaohs to check out this Sunday. She definitely makes good use of the Musket, all over the new album and studio DVD.

Definitely agree it will take a lot more amp to get those tones, esp in a band situation, no pedal can do it alone.

Here's a pretty dope pic of Baizley's setup. His main sound is Fulltone OCD into Blackout Twosome (they're separated into Fix'd Fuzz and Musket in that pic, but lately he's consolidated). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the Pharaoh and the Musket kinda play in some of the same sonic space. In addition to Kylesa, the guys in The Sword are pretty big Blackout devotees as well.

Given that I love these bands, I've pretty much found my own dream sludgy tone going OCD > Eau Claire Lightning* > Eau Claire Thunder > Pharaoh > rest of my chain. Mainly, though, you're probably want to look up Muff variants for starters.

* - Dwarfcraft custom TP/AE job, I should really get around to posting pics of it.

FAKE EDIT: Here's Peter Adams' board, as well as another John Baizley pic.

Our Review:
Richard: Every time I see a “Little Bitch Muff,” I cringe a little. But there is some good stuff on here. B-
Bobby: I like the new additions, and I love the AC30, but dude seriously get a real big muff.
