First build. Looking for some help

Hey guys I want to learn how build pedals. I was thinking for my first build I would try to make a Super Hard On clone. I have a SHO and it looks pretty simple and I love what it does so I thought I'd try building one.

So I have a few questions.. I'm a complete noob and I don't know what parts I'll need or where to find good instructions (or a schematic or whatever) for a SHO. I have a soldering iron and all that good stuff. I've looked around at pedalpartsplus and smallbear but I just don't know what parts to get.

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but I was thinking it would be cool to put it in one of those skinny little enclosures (like the kind that lovepedal uses on those little one knobbers). Is it possible to fit a SHO in there? Also I see they have some powdercoated ones that they say are perfect for screenprinting. I'm in a screenprinting class and I want to print some stuff on it. Any tips on that would be appreciated. I've been screenprinting shirts and posters for a few years but I've never done an enclosure.

I guess I'm really just looking for recommendations and tips on the build. Like I said I'm completely new to this so I don't know anything. Pretty much any tips would be helpful.

You can find all the parts at www.smallbearelec.com . The resistors will be under "carbon film resistors", and the caps will be film for the input and electrolytic for the output. The diode and transistor you can just type into the search.

You could fit it in a 1590A (the tiny box), but I wouldn't recommend it for a first build.

I did a sho in a 1590a once and it was probably the worst pedal building experience I have ever had. they are extremely unforgiving and there is NO room for error. I probably spent 12 hours figuring out where to drill and trying to stuff all the stuff in there. I certainly wouldn't try it for your first build.

the sho is simple enough and a good circuit to start on. Google SHO LAYOUT and you will find a bunch of different layouts for pcbs, vero, pad-per-hole perf, etc. you can find the pad per hole stuff at radio shack, and you can order vero/stripboard online. I don't think radio shack carries the bs170 mosfets though so you probably will end up ordering anyways. Stuff like 3pdt bypass switches you can only usually find from diy guitar specific sites like pedal parts plus, smallbear, etc.

Thanks guys. Alright I'll definately go for a regular MXR sized enclosure (I'm a noob I forgot the number).

I guess my biggest question is what kindof board should I get? The easiest one to work with would probably be best.

Also I've heard some people talk about frying components when soldering. Are any of the parts required for the SHO particularly vulnerable or hard to work with?

I think I'm going to buy two of everything (including enclosure) in case I mess up and if I don't mess up I'll give one to my friend.

It's a good idea to socket transistors, ic's, etc...especially if worried about cooking parts. Works doubly well in circuits where swapping those components changes the character a lot.

OMG! This sight is great. I want to build a buddy a treble booster on turret, so this will be a good reference when I write out my own layouts.

For my first project I've already gotten the pcb and components, but for the enclosure and jacks/pots etc I'm using Mammoth Electronics. Site and prices look good enough for me.

You can probably find most of the same stuff at small bear just thought I'd throw another site in the mix. Has anyone ever used them before? If so, how fast is their shipping?

EDIT: just placed my order anyway do I'll let you guys know how it goes. also, the veroboard layout for the sho that was posted in here is the one I'm planning on using and I have heard from other people its a good one to start on

Mammoth ships next day. I recomended smallbear because they seem to be the only one that carries carbon film resistors, which are the only ones available in the 10M you need for an SHO.

I have a love/hate thing with Mammoth. They have some cool stuff, and great prices, but their packaging is really awful. I ordered some pots of different values, and they were all in a bag together. If that wasn't enough, they usually ship with hardware on the pots/switches/etc. They're in a separate bag-- which makes it easy to lose. And one time, I didn't get hardware at all.

So, great prices, but some annoying stuff. Also, I ordered some knobs from them and they were just really pathetic. The holes weren't even in the center.

the picture in the post right after your first has the perf layout (comtrails' post). on that are the values for the resistors etc like one of the tan little ones says 100k you can use here http://www.csgnetwork.com/resistcolcalc.html to help figure out the resistance of resistor in your hand to see if it matches. admittedly i dont know what the DGS thing is (i'l like to know myself haha) but i hope the resistor site helps a bit.
