Is buying "How to Modify Guitar Pedals" worth it?

Post by jfrey »

Brian Wampler's book
http://www.amazon.com/How-Modify-Guitar ... 103&sr=1-3

Any good? Worth Getting? I have tried to do a few projects and I always get confused after populating the board. I don't know how everything wires to the switches, jacks, power, etc. I'd like something that showed pictures, and explains what happens with the signal as it goes through the circuit also.

This is what all the info I ever find online looks like:
(crazy detailed with certain things, and then completely vague with everything else)

Ask on ILF, and we'll help you make sense of the other info you don't get. : D

I'll have to look through there more in depth. I've glanced through in the past.

I'm sure it would be a handy reference, having all that, right there. By no means is it necessary, however. All info that can be found freely on the web.

I agree with the other chaps. Beavis is great. Diystompboxes is great, as well. I got the book you are wondering about and flipped through it once but never did any of the projects and decided to build from scratch. it was more fun to learn schematics by building them on bread board and then deciding whether to commit the circuit to a pedal or not.

Basically, beavis audio, studying the beginner project at Diystompboxes, and the wiring diagrams at General Guitar Gadgets got me to where I needed to be. You need lots of spare time, though.

wampler's reputation is huge in the pedal community and that book is more up to date than the anderton book. but you dont really need it. beavis audio is good. you'll learn a lot from experience and discussions about specific problems and solutions for real projects your working on. on the money thing, yeah if you start building more than one, or you try to start a buisness, it adds up.

I'll give someone some cash to write up a super detailed guide to building a bare-bones fuzz pedal (w/ pics).

Any takers?

I'm the kind of person that once I see something from every angle I'm like a savant with it, but until then it might as well be in some undecipherable code.

Things need to be precise for me to get it. If my girlfriend tells me that we have a jar of peanutbutter on the 2nd shelf of a cabinet, 6 inches from the right, and it has a green label - and that label is actually more of a teal than a green, I will never find it. Not if I spend an entire day looking directly at it. I could count the shelves and measure 6 inches in for hours, over and over again, and I will never see it.

I was likely a very exasperating child...

If I didn't already have 30 projects going on, I'd totally write something up.

Silvercrank would be awesome. Thank you so much! :yay:

Even though you don't want anything, go to the link in my sig and enter in the contest I put up. I'm giving away a couple pedals that I don't use, and that are just taking up space. :thumb:
