Can you turn an old SS amp into a small cab?

Post by jfrey »

How would you do it? I have an old really beat up Fender 25w SS amp. It doesn't work that great anymore, and I'd like to have a small cab around.

gut it and the keep the speaker in? wire the speaker up to a jack and hey presto, add some wood to fill in any holes to taste.

That's kind of what I figured. Didn't know if there might be something more to it.

Done. That was easy.

Speakers a little messed up though. I'm going to get a new one and put it in, and make the thing a little prettier. I'll post pics and clips when I've finished with that, probably later in the week.

You could also hard wire a cable to the speaker, like the old silvertones. If you're doing it though might as well go all out. We have an old peavey 2x12 combo that's had the chassis removed. Going to eventually extend the baffle so there's no longer a gap at the top.

Anyone know some good speaker brands aside from Celestion? I was looking at prices and I started to wonder if I'd just be paying for the name. I want a 12" 8 ohm.

IMO its more about what sound your after than a question of whos better. I like to mix celestion V30's and G12-T75, they have the opposite frequency response so its a very interesting and balanced sound. people do the same with eminance but I forgot what the super special famous combo is. its a greenback and something else. another thing to consider is open back closed back. some speakers sound absolutely horrible in open backs but it depends on the amp too. I usually go for closed back cause I've had a few bad experiences with open backs. vox makes a great open back amp in china cause its all voiced to match with the cheap Chinese speakers. but randomly dropping stuff in is hit or miss.

Weber speakers are pretty reasonable price wise, and have a good reputation.

The Eminence Wizard is an awesome speaker for heavy stuff and the Eminence Legend GB128 is a great all around speaker.

The Celestions are nice too but a little more expensive. http://avatarspeakers.com/ has the lowest prices that I have found. Just click on "speaker separates" and they will email you a price list. Be sure and check out their "Scratch, Dent and Overstock" section too.

Will do. Haven't gotten the new speaker for it yet though - payday is Monday.

Having a 15th and last of month pay schedule =
