Tubes question

Post by sylnau »

Hello!!!

I have a Bogner Duende 1 X 12 combo 15w.
Originally it had:
-V1 to V5: Sovtek 12AX7LPS
-V6 to V7: ARS 6V6GT (it’s written Tesla/JJ on one of them)
-V8: ARS 5AR4/GZ34

The dealer replace V1 and V2 to TAD 12AX7-C when I bought it due to microphonic.

It's almost been a year that I have the amp now... it will be time for tubes replacement soon (but I don't know anything about tubes).

Any suggestion?

Here's the layout information:
V1: Input tube both channels a and b, 12ax7
V2: 2nd stage for Channel b and Reverb Return, 12ax7
V3: 3rd stage for Channel a and b, 12ax7
V4: FX Loop, Send and Return, 12ax7
V5: Phase Inverter, 12ax7
V6: Power Tube, 6V6 (6L6 30W)
V7: Power Tube, 6V6 (6L6 30W)
V8: Rectifier, 5Y3 (12W) or 5AR4 (15W/30W)

Thanks!!!

does the amp not sound as it should?
getting mushy?
microphonic?
making a high pitched whine?

or

are you just going to experiment with tubes and the way it'll change your amp?

....after my amps have been serviced i never change tubes unless there is a problem.

I just want to try different things. The amp sound good, but maybe it could be better. I'd like the clean sound to be rounder (piano like) and the drive to be crunchier.

I own a custom Duende, and currently have a loner 15w Duende as mine is getting serviced.

Both had different brands of tubes, one with a combo of JJ powertubes with Sovtek 12AX7's and one with JJ's with chinese 12AX7: sound difference was negligible.

Maybe you should change guitars or pickups before the tubes. I've a Jazzmaster with Curtis Novak's with Jazzy vintage in neck and p90 in bridge, their amps are awesome through fine electronics. My playing is indeed bell chime like via that amp, which is why I invested in it after trying it with my Jazzy on a stack of available boutique amps in NZ.

If you wanted more crunch, you should have gone for the Shiva ;)

I've read you can switch the 6v6 for 6l6 - check forums on TGP.

If you do get any NOS that make it sound twice as good though, please let us, or me, know, heh.
great trades with: Lintybits, smallsnd/bigsnd, bennybanana, julius_deane, bass_econo, rustywire, jbf3, Dandolin, goroth, devnulljp, Helter, Justinm1789, Inconuucl, NDominy, Uncle Grandfather

I got the Duende for it's low wattage (Shiva would be too loud in my small appartement).
You are probably right... I tried it at the store with a Duesenberg that have P90 in the neck... got that sound I'm looking for. But can't afford a Duesenberg at the moment.
