help me learning shiz

Post by the Life Aquatic »

Haha just posted in the gear thread till i realized i was in the wrong one, my bad :picard:
Alright so in the beginning of the summer i set out to start building my own pedals. I knew the expense and the risk of it, im willing to take it. I only built really three pedals, an lpb1, a dallas arbitrer fuzz face and a feedback looper pedal. They all work but not to the level im satisfied with, they all can be better. I feel like im doing something wrong: whether its with my soldering, and construction or my board layout. but i was wondering if anyone could recommend a book i could buy to read, learn and reference in order to help me build more quality pedals. Ive learned from my past builds and know things to change to make better but i feel like just learning on my own isnt enough. thanks in advance for any help

Experience is the best teacher for pedal stuff. If you're after theory, pick up some Forrest Mims books.

I love the smell of solder in the morning.

Successful dealings with: blooghost, starcastic, bronzetalon, theavondon, absent, jero, sevenSHARPnine, magiclawnchair, oldangelmidnight, and others that I can't remember lol

What exactly is wrong with your pedals?

Do a bit of googling for solder technique. There's lots of good and bad info out, but if you post what you found here, we can probably confirm it.

Beavis has a lot of great info. Their (his) soldering section is good, but a few things I'd change. You don't need the iron as hot as he recommends, and I dig chisel shaped tips for a lot of things.

Trolling the interwebs is good and its free. My first pedals didnt have everything as neat as possible so i can understand that. Youll get better with time. There a lot you get from experience that you wont get from a book. Not that books are bad i just feel that forums are a more to the point way of learning.
