Which pedal should I get?

Post by Snowblind »

Right now I have just been using the dirt from my amp but I want to get a fuzz. However, so far I think its between these fuzz's Devi Ever Rocket, DE Shoegazer, Big Muff Pi (and then get a TS9DX for boost), or maybe a Vintage RAT from the 80's. Also, if I were to get one of the Devi Ever pedals I was looking for something similar to an Effector 13 NOFI pedal but I can't find one anywhere is there an alternative I could look for? Also, I need this pedal to work good in a band with two guitarist, so it needs to cut through. I play shoegaze, alt rock, indie, grunge, and some classic rock. Some bands I listen to are Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Hum, Weezer, Pavement and The Rentals, just to name a few. It doesn't have to cover all those but pretty close. I am open to other recommendations as well. Thanks

A stock Muff won't cut, but one with tone bypass or a flat mids switch will. You might also have some success running a TS9 AFTER the Muff to restore the midrange. That would sound interesting.

A Rat is a good choice just the way it is.

Between mentioning Weezer and the Dave Grohl avatar, I think you'll be most pleased right away with a Rat. It's all over Weezer's albums, and the Foo Fighters sound is a Rat into an AC-30.

People say the same thing about a big muff.

I'd suggest just start trying the ones on your list. You'll always wonder if you don't try em. I've been through alot of great pedlulz, and keep coming back to the same ones.

And another +1 for Rat.

The Rat would be okay, but it only does one sound, for more Smahsing Pumpkins esque sound I'd get a DE Shoegazer or a Russian Big Muff, I'd also check out Fuzzhugger Arc Flash it's kind of a cross between the rat and the Shoegazer, also check the b/s/t Threads, there's always awesome deals there! :thumb:

Rats do more than one sound. Turn the gain down! It's one hell of an overdrive. Turn the filter way up! It fuzzes out nicely.

Alright thanks for the advice the RAT is getting a lot of love so that will probably be the first I check out. I was thinking and I know how the Shoegazer and Rocket have two pedals in one. But does devi have a pedal that has the SM and Bit in one because if she did I would be all over that. Also, are you recommending the regular arc flash or arc flash oscillator? Thanks

Definitely check out the Rat! I like to keep mine with the gain at around 10:00 and the filter at around 12:00 for a nice overdrive, and then boost it to get fuzzy.

As far as Devi's pedals go, the Shoegazer was kind of "meh" for shoegaze, but the Aenima kills. Grab one of her single pedals and have one of the guys her mod it. :thumb:

The stock muff was also kind of "meh" on its own. Boosted by a Rat is another story though.

Either, I'd probably get teh regular one, I'd probably never use teh oscillation mode, but whatever floats your boat, and someone is selling one used in the b/s/t thread for $70 or something.

Like a lot of people have already said, a Rat will cover half of your influence. The Big Muff will cover the other half. My favorite version is the Op Amp Big Muff. That's the one that Billy Corgan used on the first couple SP albums.

Also, don't let the name fool you, Devi's Shoegazer doesn't do shoegaze very well. It's more of a tease than anything. I'd stick to the Rats and Muffs. I know you mentioned the TS9DX boosting a Muff, but Tubescreamer into a Rat is a pretty classic combo too.

Stomp Under Foot makes reproductions of most the main versions of the Muffs. Blackout Effectors and Earthquaker Devices both make awesome versions of the Green Russian Muff. Even if you pick up a regular stock EHX BM, there are plenty of guys around here who can mod it for you so that you won't get lost in the mix.

Definitely check out the FuzzHugger Arc Flash! Talk about more than one sound.
