Just saw a Fabulous Thunderbirds concert on TV and, with the vintage Texas blues sound, I wasn't expecting to see much in the way of guitar pyrotechnics (beyond the cliche'd 12/8 Vaughan-isms) But, boy was I surprised by Kirk Fletcher (I think that's his name..one of the two guitar players in the band.
Any others here have stories of bands where you weren't expecting great guitar playing, but were pleasantly surprised?

If we're gonna talk about unexpected 'public displays of guitar awesomeness!' then, I have to mention there was some guy in DC, standing outside one of those big old theatres, with his amp plugged in to an outlet on the outside..just tearing it up...it was
And then later that same day, I saw an old Chinese guy playing an erhu out in front of the Smithsonian
very cool..first time I'd ever seen or heard one of these in person..

I saw him twice in the early 00's, and yes, dude can shred. When that guy started blowing up, he was at a crossroads in his career. He could play adventurous blues rock or he could write more VH-1 approved songs and breathe deeply into a microphone. We all know which path he choose.
Also, it completely blows my mind that Vince Gill can shred. Now, that's crazy.
