Epiphone Valve Jr Gain Mod?

Post by steevdeadman »

Hey Guys...

Do any of you know of a mod to add a gain knob to an epiphone valve jr? I got one waiting for me and I wanna put a gain control so I can run it loud and clean... any ideas?

Thanks! :thumb:

The "volume" knob on a stock VJ is actually a gain knob. You can add a master volume if you want. Instead of a master volume, I added a built-in attenuator in my VJ when I rebuilt it on an eyelet. It was a fun project, and honestly not too difficult for a first tube amp endeavor.

Check out the mods at sewatt.com. That's where I got all my info.

Just adding a master volume would be pretty minimal in terms of time and effort. All you'd need is a pot, some wire, and the ability to drill a hole in the chassis. You could even put it on the back of the chassis if you wanted.

Here's a link to info on my finished project:

I bought my latest VJ (yep, I go through them like underwear now) already modded with a master volume/gain control sort of thing. I don't like it at all though. The previous owner replaced R7 with a pot (500k). I'm thinking I'll take that out and put some sort of switchable mod on there to fill the new hole in the chassis... bright switch maybe?

I recommend a pentode/triode switch. :thumb:
