Looking for a ring modulator... but which?

Post by Abanoise »

Hi guys, I need a new ring modulator, but sincerly I don't know what I could try...
I already own an EH Frequency Analyzer (big box) and a Moog. I really like the EH, how deep it could go without losing low frequencies; unfortunately it's too big, with his boring power adaptor, and without an LFO. The Moog is also good, with LFO, lots of options, but it doesn't reach decent low frequencies, it's quite unusable with a drop C bass...
Any suggestion? Copilot? Frantone? LastGasp? Fairfield?
Thank you very much...
You're not a musician, you're a low frequencies generator!

I haven't actually played one, but I want a Ring Thing. Hardcore style. From what I hear, it is essentially a Frequency Analyzer (sound wise) with presets and eight kajabillion-billion features. Plus, it's smaller!

I used to own a Moog, and it was pretty good. Although the preamp/buffer seemed to act weird with other pedals/muh tonez.

I can highly recommend the Randy's revenge...very musical, lots of toanz with only a few controls, and the filter can allow you to tame some of the shrillness, or leave it in if you want :wha?: Also using the Montreal Assembly ringmod with the light sensitive probe comes up with all sorts of evil alien overlord gangrape toanz... :thumb:
buncha stuff...

Actually, re-reading your post again, I can firther recommend the Randy's Revenge - the filter (low pass) allows you to shape out all the higher frequencies, and it can sound nice and deep. I havent used drop tunings with it, but I have played around with it using my bass, and I was definitely able to come up with some good usable sounds.

hehe ;-)

Frantone - best bell sounds and vibrato/trem and also headroom (24V)
Fairfield - more sci-fi and not as much headroom as the Frantone glacier but creepy and super nice on its own!
Last Gasp SPK1 - not so cool due to bypass bleeding there are better pedals out there now!
Last Gasp SPK2 - Pretty sick and nice to create a deep drone sound not so good for bell sounds (LAL word of mouth, they have a ultimate ring mod in the works...)
Lovetone - Sickest ring mod ever but quiet expensive and always fuzzy / a bit thin sounding...

Here are some clips i made, guitar is always downtuned to dropped C

Thought the MF102 was the holy grail of ring mods. Does not compute.
