I just recently moved into a new place and one of the houses up the road had one of those giant old ss magnavox record player/radio consoles outside for trash. Well me being me investigated and managed to get both speakers (which are in individual Styrofoam cabs, too cool!) as well as the main guts of the circuit.
This item did not work, btw, so no, I didn't just fuck up and awesome record player (trust me, I wanted the entire thing). I figured I better get the goods out before it went to the scrap heap.
Looks like I got a good score. Haven't tested the speakers yet, but plan on adding jacks and using them in the foam cabs (at least for a goofy demo). After I discharge all the electrolytics I will of course be getting out whatever cc's, fish, etc that I can.
I see a scad of 22K and 2.2K resistors, some 1M and 10K resistors, at least one mushroom tranny along with all the others, some tropical fish caps, polystyrene caps as well.
You could definitely build a couple of mojo-infused fuzzes with that.
Just take your time and desolder properly. Don't just try to cut them out with snips. You'll ruin the stuff otherwise. Trust me, I know form experience.

So I know I should desolder everything and whatnot, I plan on doing so, but for the transformer and elec. caps...what would be the best way to go about removing? I want to get it done quickly, yet safely

If you're not going to keep transformer and electrolytic caps, just rip 'em out however they come. Grab the electros with pliers, twist, and pull! For the tranny, cut the leads with snips and unscrew the supports.
If you want to keep them (which I doubt would be valuable or useful), desolder them as well.
But I'd recommend to either wear a dust mask or have a fan nearby blowing briskly. That old shit may have some funky carcinogens that could materialize as dust when you get busy breaking it down.

Don't worry about getting shocked. I assume you don't have this thing plugged in, of course.
Power supply caps typically discharge after half an hour or so, but to be safe, you could just wait a full day after the last time it was plugged in to get in there and start working.
Also, for extra precaution, use one hand to work the clippers and keep your other hand in your pocket. This way it will be far less likely for you to "complete the circuit" and get shocked, in the unlikely event that there is still some charge on those big electros.

I got the tranny and caps removed last night. I started the overwhelming task of removing the other goodies as well.
Right now I'm continuing, this very uh, time consuming to say the least, task. Have at least 30-40 resistors, 15 caps, a few diodes and caps I've never seen before, and a couple mushroom transistors (f41n2 & f45n4m ?).
To any who consider trying this...it seems alligator clips and patience go a long way.
I just scored a ton of mojo from my stepdad who is an elevator mechanic and had bags and boxes full of random elextronics no longer being used... so now I have to sort through it.
