I think the racism adds to it? Like, if you're looking at it as the archaic prose of a forgotten time or whatever it rings truer to me because of the underlying vibes-delivered-through-syntax and that shit doesn't make me uncomfortable (this is easier, obviously, the further removed from modern day the creator is).
His dialog would have been vastly improved had he ever held a real conversation with another human being, though. Of that there is no doubt?

I just always preferred Fritz Leiber and Frank Belknap Long's stories. Hell, even Ramsey Campbell.

+1 to all of this.
For me, Lovecraft did atmosphere and imagery really well. All other criticism aside, when he writes about a crumbling castle or an ancient tomb, I buy it with all five senses.
