Biggest pain is definitely fitting them b/c wide gaps b/w slats. I have used both the double-ended no-wire jacks and EBS flats, so my pedals fit right close to each other and don't fall over. Unless I'm running a few in a row I don't usually have unintentional activation issues. I find that I'm slightly less likely to want to get into b/w song tweaking, but then, I've grown less enamored of that for the projects I've been doing (although that is slated to change ). To me, that is the number one advantage of ginormopedals--in-song foot tweakage (but the control layout has to be propitious).
Here's my latest mini (Buzzaround by pickdropper):
pickdropper is meticulous. How's that thing sound? any gating?

It's true that the side jacks negate some of the benefit horizontally, but many mini pedals are also shorter vertically, which has allowed me to get more onto my board. I also (sometimes) like the minimalism that they tend to encourage, given that I already have too many knobs to tweak.

What are the two minis on the left?

Thanks!
The black one on the left is a LovePedal Babyface trem with the cheesy sticker removed. The depth and volume knobs are internal, which is a little annoying, but it sounds really good and I almost always use trem at max depth, so it's fine for me.
The one next to it is a channel switch box from Saturnworks; it just switches my amp channel and amp fx loop, but it's a lot smaller than the one that came with the amp, so I can keep it on the board this way.

The awkwardness of mini harmonized with the fragility of tubes.

For a moment I thought those were slot car racers.

This is maybe halfway between pedal demo + artistic statement, so I'm 100% sure if this is the best spot, but speaking of mini pedals, a friend loaned me his Superego with the comment I could find out which of my crappy pedals would sound good in its effects loop. So I turned that idea into an album.
Pretty much all minis, pretty much all cheapos. In case you wanted to hear a Russian speak-and-spell into an auto wah being turned to an ambient wash.

I thought they were dildos.
To answer the question, board space. As long as I can hit the button to turn the thing on, then I can use it. Plus it allows more room for MORE PEDALS.
