The Smiths and Cat Stevens (drove me insane as a child - cannot stand that guy). I could probably add anything with heavy use of autotune as well

I haven't listened to enough of Bon Iver to have much of an opinion. I was thinking about all the pop acts that use it as a crutch to try to sing properly, vs using it as a robotic effect like a vocoder.

It can be used as an instrument/effect (Bon Iver, Kanye West) or it can be used like it was used on Rosie O'Donnell's Christmas album.

Hmmm, I can see how this might present a problem when listening to music…ramonovski wrote:Something is wrong with me. I fucking hate vocals and most of instrumental stuff is fucking boring.![]()

Funny to know who hits the "brown note" for different people. But sometimes a bad voice just works. Anthony Kiedis, for example, is one of the most terrible "singers" I've ever heard. But on some RHCP tracks (none spring to mind right now), it fits the song. And even though I love guys like Neil Young, Mascis and Doug Martsch, I get why others can't get into it. Only example I can come up with of a voice I just can't listen to anymore is Robert Plant. As soon as I realised he was nothing but a poor imitation of Steve Marriott, it was over for me. Oh, and that Scouse bloke who replaced Bon Scott in AC/DC. Fucking awful.

True as a effect it can be interesting… although we shall not speak of the song that brought that in to view, no we will not, some things are left unspoken.casecandy wrote:Oh! Yeah totally. I very rarely if ever register words when listening to music so i tend to not like almost anything that's vocal-driven except when the voice has a really interesting timbre and/or delivers lyrics cryptically so I don't have to follow any words (probably why most of my favourite vocal bands are Japanese, because their syllables are much purer musical cells than most English language). The only exception i can think of is spoken word stuff from bands like Slint because it's basically storytelling on top of music rather than telling stories through song, if that makes sense.
I think a lot of instrumental bands end up being so boring because they form bands the same way you would a conventional rock band but then leave out the vocalist, gotta get a bit more creative, like Tortoise, they're awesome.
also seconding the Smiths, RHCP, Modest Mouse, HEALTH.
adding Roger Waters.

It took me a long time to get into Ian Curtis' vocal style. But when I did, I started loving it. Sorta the same with Jim Morrison and Dylan. Listened to Joe Meek's "I hear a new world" last night, and some of those chipmunky vocals are dreadful. They sorta fit with the music, though.
