Stranglehold was a Phase 90, or a Phase 45. Just Sayin'.

Grand Orbiter is based on the ROSS from what I think.

Yeah, it's based on the Ross so they say.
I didn't like the Grand Orbiter that much, I mean, it has a nice sound to it but compared to a Small Stone it's very subtle and in my opinion the controls also made quite subtle differences wherever you set them.

That sounds to me like the Cusack Tap A Phase or the VFE Enterprise would be great options for you.monkeydancer wrote:I've never really found THE phaser to suit me. Started with a small stone, and while I like the basic sound a LOT the volume drop is annoying and I'd like more options than a switch between two preset sounds.
Then I got an EHX stereo polyphase, and while the features are fantastic (start and stop and square are so cooool) the sound didn't quite do it for me.
Got a Faye Sing and I loved it, it's a different sound and the manual sweep with an exp pedal is cool. But the sweep is a little weird with an uneven sort of blip at one end and I found I never quiiite loved it with fuzz, or it had to be set differently for different fuzzes, or I just wanted a change or something. Honestly I can't quite remember why I sold it!
Now I'm back to just the small stone and while it does ok I'd like something better, with no vol drop and a bit more tweakability.
Phase 90s don't really do it for me, I like the subtle sound but I can't jive with the way you CAN'T get an intense swoosh out of them. Basically the same problem as the SS; not enough control.

I was about to order the VFE Enterprise V2, but then I read a review somewhere (Amazon I think), saying it was way too subtle).
And I kind of dislike the geeky reference to the Enterprise ship... even if it has anything to do with the sound.

I don't know, I think I read that post too but in my opinion the feedback can get pretty high and it does positive as well as negative feedback, for example it does do the whistling arpeggiate kind of thing that you hear in some Small Stones (not all of them have it).
Also the Enterprise is definitely not more subtle than the Grand Orbiter or something in my opinion.
It's a bit less deep / thick sounding though compared to a Small Stone and less extreme in the phasing as it's offcourse based on the Phase 90.
I'd say:
classic phasing, only 4 stages -> Phase 90
classic to extreme phasing, only 4 stages -> Small Stone
modern and extreme phasing -> go with more stages if you like that kind of sound
I really seem to dislike the sound of more than 4 stages, if I listen to clips from the Bi-Phase for instance that doesn't do anything for me.
You seemed to like that one so it could be that you're a man who (also) likes more than 4 stages, I'm guessing you want a bit of versatility out of your phaser too if I understand your posts correctly?

The more I try to find a phaser I like, the more I think I won't get one.

It's not a pedal I NEED and really only like it on clean guitar or clav. or rhodes...sylnau wrote:The more I try to find a phaser I like, the more I think I won't get one.
I hope you find the sound you are looking for cause I know you've been phase crazy for awhile now...
The old Script 90's and the 80s Clones are my favorite...
