I just see why we need a core... I've always just called all sludgy music "sludge" I don't see why we need to separate everything and put it in little baggies with color coded labels..

I've just always thought of it as a natural way that we try to explain and describe things better. We do it in all disciplines and fields. Music is the only one where people seem to be against it.
Aside from that, it's just practical. If someone says to me that a band is sludge - in just the general sense - well I really still don't have any idea what they sound like. If on the other hand someone tells me that a band is Southern Stoner Sludge for example, well then I know almost exactly what they sound like.
I see a lot of benefit in being descriptive and specific. I see absolutely none in being general and vague. Also, genre classification and evolution is fascinating.
