I'm pretty sure someone would have mentioned this already but the Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom is an extremely versatile pedal that can be tweaked into being an OD or a Fuzz. And on some settings it has flavors of distortion. I'd always recommend it for a first pedal. It also stacks nicely.
Hoof and Musket are two Big Muffs and the sound of those is pretty distinctive. It depends on how you play. Muffs are the thing for riffing but I like to play chords and that makes Muffs a no-no. At least the variants I have played so far. So it also depends on your style of playing.

Devi seems to be a good point to start too, because the pedals have a good price. Same applies to Mellowtones.

Pretty damn true. Also, maybe look into the Mellowtone Singing Tree. It's got tons of fun!

Is the rehouse really necessary?

Not really, I just like the layout better with the 4th knob after it's been redone. Mostly it was for shits and gigs.

how much wouLd the mod cost I'm not to good with a soldering iron so I wouldn't trust myself yet. Also, well the rat I was looking at was from the 80's and had the lm308 chip (I think that's what it is) but does that make a hide difference? Also how does the turbo Rat stack up against the regular Rat? I look into the hot cake

I don't actually remember what I paid for the mod, but there's a few guys around here you could ask to do it. I don't really notice a gigantic difference with opamp changes but that's certainly not to say there aren't any sonic differences. The Turbo Rat uses LED diodes for clipping rather than silicon so it sounds a bit different. In my opinion it feels a bit beefier and crunchier, kinda overall more mean. I really like LEDs in Rats, in fact I might have somebody around here swap out my silicons to LEDs in my FKR. :poke:

I sold a Rat2 with Reutz mod for like $60 shipped a month or two ago. :idk:

This thread is making me regret doing that. :picard:

That's the one I bought!

What's your price range? That could be a determining factor too.
under $200 perferably $150 but if its worth it I will go over a little ;)
You can get the DE 90 direct from Devi which is $50 and the used Arc Flash over in the b/s/t thread is $70 there's two for $120, if a used rat is $50 that's $170, even with added tax/shipping your still under $200, just get all three, they all have different uses, which will be reavealed to you at teh appropriate time!

She doesn't have the 90 on her buy direct right now so I would have to wait. Thanks everyone Im going to check out the Algal Bloom and if that doesn't blow my mind or something all long those lines (that rhymed  kinda ) then Im going to go with the Rat or a clone of a Rat and the Arc Flash :)

Hey I was just browsing the Fuzzhugger site and decided to look at some of SS/BS stuff and was pretty interested in the year 4545 how would that suit my needs? Also, does tht bond well with other pedals such as the RAT?

I LOVE the 4545, but it would NOT suit your styles (based on what sound your wanting). It's a brutal noise device that sounds like kitties in a blenders. Er, something.

I'd suggest getting a good foundation fuzz like a Rat or something. Then add the crazy 4545 to your rig. You SHOULD be able to get the sounds your looking for with the TAFM though. IDK though, I need to play one of those.

You could look at something like the ABsynth or the Arc Oscillator if your wanting oscillations. :idk:

Probably a pedal directed more for fuzz that can get pretty crazy. At the moment Im looking at:
Pumpkin Pi or any type of op amp muff
devi noise floor
Year 4545 (big maybe not sure if this is right for me still checking it out)
Devi Ever Ok
Fuzz Factory (might be good to start with since it seems like it can do a lot of different tones)

Oh, oh!!! Can I vote?
The Pumpkin Pi or Fuzz Factory would be awesome. One thing about the FF is that it can have a bit of a learning curve. When I first got one I thought it was trying to kill me in my sleep, but then I started figure out the controls and it was  after that. Before that though there were plenty of WTF moments. haha.

As for SS/BS pedals, I'd check out the TAFM before the 4545. Have you checked out the Secret Seasons Snowdrift? I have one coming in the mail. I was hoping it would arrive today, but it didn't. It must have taken its bike, because it's taking forever to get here. :(

Yippeeee for fuzz!!!! :joy:

If you dig the FF try looking into a Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom (with oscillation) or an AB-synth. At about half the price they do the same thing better. And more

well i've had it for few weeks and i'm still discovering sounds just by randomly turning the knobs  i just can't understand how do the knobs influence each other  but it's a GREAT fuzz and even though it covers many tones, it just makes you GAS for another fuzz
