Reverse setting on the Avalanche Run isn't anything like reverse delay on a DD-5, or even a Nemesis. I had a Nemesis for a while, and thought all the sounds were *fine*, but nothing really stood out on it, even with all the tweakability.

DD-5 has the best reverse delay out there in terms of sound, availability, and price IMO. It also pairs really well with an El Cap. That pair would also give you two loopers to mess with.

That being said, just to throw another option out there: you can conceivably do everything you want aside from analog with a Chase Bliss Mood. It has really nice reverse delay on the Old Blood delay side. You can use the Drolo side as a sort of freeze. The reverb on the Mood is also pretty good, and has some tricks and can be dialed in to give you that same sort of edge-of-oscillation feel.
The reverse mode on the DD-5 is the shit. But 70ish Euro to get me another DD-5 just for that one mode...seems a bit stupid. Hoping the Nemesis will get me by and that the "neuro app" doesn't annoy the fuck outa me. Bought it used for a flippable price, so we'll see :idk:

Regardless, I'm jumping on the first good deal for a CB Mood, if one ever crosses my path.

To me this sounds like a job for the Fairfield Meet Maude. It has a switchable compression effect for the repeats (so the oscillation is kept under control) as well as some glorious random modulation.

Oh yes - I've been loving it since I got it four years ago.

Meet Maude, 80tape...solid suggestions, definatelly gonna have to keep those in mind in case I don't bond with the Nemesis. Which I plan to give a fair shot, it's just that it's not what I was originally aiming for. Might lack a bit of character, I might tweak one or two settings and never mess with the zillions of bread and butter type delay modes...

Both the MM and 80tape are close to impossible to find on the local(ish) used market though. I'm not opposed to buying new if it's worth it, but if I'm spending more than 300Euro on a pedal, I might as well consider the CB Mood or Thermae too.

The In Limbo keeps the oscillation reasonably in check.

The DE7 sounds like it does because there are diodes to clip the oscillation if it gets too loud and that keeps it from rising in volume until it hits the headroom limit. The Skreddy Echo also does this IIRC.

Yeah, the Ibanez ES-2 does a similar thing. You can flick a switch to either control the oscillation, or to let it go haywire. Sold mine because that was all I used it for :idk:

There are already smaller and less expensive suggestions, but a vintage EHX Memory Man was great at creating a luscious bed of almost infinite background repeats, when my friend let me try his. It was one with Chorus/Vibrato knob if I recall, maybe an 80s one.

Thnks a bunch for the suggestions...Nearly all of those vintage and booteek recommendations were/are completely non-existant on the european used market. Still keeping my eyes open, but for the time being I'm having tons of fun with the Nemesis + Slö combo I just acquired :)
