Ahh I can't wait to get one of these. I wish i could afford a minimoog but at 3,500 there is no way. This is pretty much a no brainer with how it sounds and at the price of a minitaur.

Damn it. That sounds really good. And after they sell a ton of these, the even-cheaper Used prices will be difficult to resist...

What's with the Model D craze? Serious question.

I was considering getting a Mother 32 but then this and Roland SE02 were just released...

It's just a really good sounding synth. Full sounding with the 3 osc's, good for basses and leads, that filter. It's the synth that all other synths are compared to (by some). Legendary, classic. There's only so much you can do with a fixed architecture subtractive analog mono synth, so why not use a format that's tried and tested? If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

There were obviously patents at one point, but according to Uli Behringer they're "long expired". Studio Electronics made the SE-1, which is really similar, back in 2000, so there have been clones of some sort.

Basically, the tech has gotten to the point where cheap clones can be made now.
IIRC, the SE-1 was expensive as fuck.

Also, with Moog re-upping the Model D, there's a lot more interest in clones than even before.

I just think it's the rise of interest in analog synths in general, which most likely also made Moog decide to reissue their most sought after synth. It's not just clones, there's something special about having 3 oscillators. I can't think of too many vintage synths with 3 oscillators, but there's a bunch of new ones. Waldorf Pulse 2 and Matrixbrute have been out for some time now, Dreadbox are releasing the Medusa and Analogue Solutions have just released the Fusebox, and then of course there are the Minimoog clones.

It's probably a combination of being able to make it at a low price point and a heightened interest in analog synths from budget minded hobbyists. I think for decades the pool of consumers who didn't wear capes or pilot a mothership was pretty limited for new analog synths.

I wasn't disagreeing with the technology part.

If you're looking for something a tad different, the BFF from Malekko looks rad. It's a wavetable oscillator and the sequencer looked pretty sophisticated. Still has the architecture of a subtractive synth though.

There's a thread on some forum, Gearslutz I think, where Uli goes into great detail about all that stuff, with links to actual patents, court stuff and also other stuff. But yeah.
