I feel like we're all kind of quietly let down by the new Wiz record?

I think the recycled riffs were a little too blatant this time through (Sadiowitch is a good example). I still enjoyed it, I listened to it last night even, it's just not on my top albums list. I'm still certainly satisfied with buying it though.

My Lord Mantis record came yesterday. It's definitely in the conversation for number one, for me. I guess I have my top 3 all vying for #1

1. Yob -- Clearing
2. Bongripper -- Miserable
3. Lord Mantis -- Death Mask

Just got From all Purity yesterday, was able to listen to the first song and it was rad as shit. That album will likely end up on my year-end list as well.

Death Mask is such a fucking awesome record. It's pretty all over the place while staying within some confine that Lord Mantis seem to have set for themselves. It's fucking great.

I listened to one song, was underwhelmed, then read the Decibel article, said "fuck Jus Oborn" and never listened to the whole thing.

I enjoy the album but that article certainly sours it.

Basically, he attempted to throw every single person who helped him get where he is under the bus. Former EW members, Lee Dorrian, etc. He has zero maturity or accountability for himself. Just acts like a shithead the whole time. And apparently he was pissed at Decibel for printing... exactly what he said.

They're in the middle of a lawsuit with Rise Above, IIRC. That's kind of a bummer, I guess.

I second the Baptists album, that was probably #3 of the year for me. They were also possibly the best show I went to this year. Such a good band.

No one mentioned The Body - I Shall Die Here yet? I thought it was awesome with that Haxan Cloak sauce all over it!

Apart from that I really dug the Indian record, and I guess the new Old Man Gloom record will settle in the top regions too once I get to listen to it.

Try as I might, I just can't get into Thou. We played with them last month, and I just couldn't get into it.

That Indian record rules.

Pretty disappointing year in doom in my opinion. Everything is the same old tired regurgitated riffs and tones.

the three standouts for me were
Bongripper
Zaum
Blood Farmers

Out of curiosity, what would you recommend that's *not* the "same old tired regurgitated riffs and tones"? It doesn't have to have been released this year, and I'm not looking to pick a fight - genuinely curious about what other people consider "progressive" or "envelope-pushing" in the doom genre.
