I think a lot of phaser searches would end if MXR made this, but orange.

I too prefer small stones over phase 90s. If you don't mind digital, the hyperphase is really cool and has lots of options...did i mention, cheap? Gets those wah/filter'esque tones in certain settings as well.

For a straight-up phaser, the Whetstone was my favorite, because of the amount of different tweaking options you got. It's based on the small stone, but no volume drop there. Plus you can change to an asymmetrical sweep and cop the univibe tones, too.

I've always been much more of a flanger guy, but I just had a ton of fun playing around with this for an hour:

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
I can't really answer about phaser.
I've only owned two.
A weird Tone Loc ibanez and a big box small stone.
However, I am looking at either the Grand Orbiter or Whetstone as my next phasor purchase. This is only because TC Electronic doesn't make one. That is not to say that should a Tone Print Phasor come out, I'd sell (whichever I end up with, Grand Orbiter or Whetstone).
Granted, I know that's not much help, but Small Stone is great for what it does. I find it a little limiting for what I want out of a phasor though. It can be fun for clean work. I put it on my terrible Casio sometimes.

I'm not a big phaser guy but the Maxon Rotary Phase I had was pretty cool.

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
Last night I had a synth jam with a buddy who owns something like 20 phasers.
The ones we used were an old Akai somethin'er'other, the Diamond Phase, Ibanez PH99, Mr. Black Gilamando, Moog phaser and the Cusack tap-a-phase. For all out awesomeness, the Cusack and Moog are just incredible. My favorite is the Moog for it's syrupy sweetness and nuts controllability but the Tap-A-Phase is CRAZY good for insanely slow (beyond slow) sweeps. last time I was there got to play the Faye's Her and wasn't that impressed, but we were running it mono I later found out. So I'm sure it's badass.
The PH99 doesn't go as slow as I'd like but it can be very subtle and so deep it can tear your speakers or ear drums.
The Diamond is purely beautiful in every way. And crazy shiny! SHINEEEEEE
I'm not making a suggestion, I'm just tossing what I know atchya.

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
just recently went on the phaser journey
ended up with 2 small stones
a v4 from the 90s
and a black russian
the russian sounds better
more organic if that makes sense
but because of its size ive veen using the v4
dont get me wrong they both sound good
the only other phase that i was considering was the sibling
combination of sound,size,and price
otherwise i would have went for a whetstone
i also have a badstone in my possesion
as much as i like the manual sweep
it doesnt sound as good as the black or the v4
maybe ill get castrated for saying that but its my feelers
the black russian needs a good home b.t.w.
ive been using the v4 on the lowend side of a stereo rig
makes me think all phasers should have a mix knob

I had a whetstone but I sold it last year. Really nice, but too many options and tweaks, I wanted something simple. I'm beyond happy with the PH-1r.... although I wouldn't be opposed to another phaser in the future just for fun......

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
My favorites aren't so easily obtained...
BEZ Street Sweeper, for manual phasing
Effectrode phase-O-matic Deluxe, for the best oscillating phasing I've ever heard.
Dat tube sound = perfection...and with an expression pedal one can gradually bring it in and taper it from subtle to outer space pulsing rayguns/divebombing ufos

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
I love me some phaser.
I have a Grand Orbiter, and quite honestly I don't think I've heard anything that I feel I should replace it with. Unless I can get my hands on a Maestro Stage Phaser, which I actually had once briefly, only the phasing didn't actually work. But man, did it make my tone super fat. If I ever find one that isn't going for $5,000 on eBay, or a clone, I might swoop in on it.
The Grand Orbiter is great for bass > fuzz > phaser heavy tones. I find myself leaving everything set to noon because it sounds so great right there. Maybe small adjustments as needed, but otherwise you don't need to change much.
So what I'm getting at is that the Grand Orbiter is a solid choice if that's the kind of sound you want. If I remember correctly, its more Small Stone than Phase 90, although I don't remember the exact pedal its based on (something by Maxon?). And it can be found for much less than the Whetstone, which I've never played but wouldn't mind trying out.
I've also always wanted to try a Maxon PH350, but by the time I get really into effects they stopped making them.

Re: What is your favorite phaser pedal (some sound idea)
I've never really found THE phaser to suit me. Started with a small stone, and while I like the basic sound a LOT the volume drop is annoying and I'd like more options than a switch between two preset sounds.
Then I got an EHX stereo polyphase, and while the features are fantastic (start and stop and square are so cooool) the sound didn't quite do it for me.
Got a Faye Sing and I loved it, it's a different sound and the manual sweep with an exp pedal is cool. But the sweep is a little weird with an uneven sort of blip at one end and I found I never quiiite loved it with fuzz, or it had to be set differently for different fuzzes, or I just wanted a change or something. Honestly I can't quite remember why I sold it!
Now I'm back to just the small stone and while it does ok I'd like something better, with no vol drop and a bit more tweakability.
Phase 90s don't really do it for me, I like the subtle sound but I can't jive with the way you CAN'T get an intense swoosh out of them. Basically the same problem as the SS; not enough control.
