Yeah bro, first time in my life I've had to use a tone control.
(though 4001s weren't exactly dark to start with)

They might chew up your pretty little fingertips if you aren't used to them though.

funny, i've never NOT had one :D

that's the reason why i stopped using them

i landed on Ernie Balls because:

D'addarios broke a lot and sucked for me overall
DRs are too expensive for breaking low Es as much as i did
Elixirs sounded too smooth
GHS Gilmours were awesome but got dull sounding pretty fast

EBs are well priced (the special models like Titanium and CObalts are more expensive, but still better compared to almost equally expensive DRs ) and they seem to have a very vicious zing to them, which i liked on my tele and i love it on the jazzmaster :)

i'm still not sure whether to go 011-054 next time... i'm used to a regular 011-048 set but i know the Beefy Slinky sound pretty damn huge

I always seem to change my Strings and Tunings all the time. I need a band so I have some consistency.

Oh yeah, I mentioned before that I have custom balanced Circle K sets on my basses, here are the gauges:

My G&L (usually tuned ADADG): .150 / .112 / .079 / .059 / .043
My VM Jag (usually tuned CGCG): .130 / .086 / .065 / .043
My Ricky (usually tuned DADG): .112 / .079 / .059 / .043

After a lot of experimenting I'm all for Dunlop. When I'm funny I play the rev billie G 8s or the heavy core 10-48. these sets are so well balanced, I love them even in drop tunings.

Just threw a new set of Dean Markley Blue Steel 11s on my JM and they sound and feel great..but I'm a sucker for a wound G and it's hard to find with many sets of strings now.

For my standard tuned guitars, I used to use Dunlop Heavy Core 10-48 strings, but I think my string tension is killing my wrists, so I'm gonna swap those out for regular Dunlop 10-46 strings.

For my C Standard/Bb guitar I use Dunlop Heavy Core 12-54 strings.

For bass, I use Dean Markley Bluee Steel 45-105 strings.

I use Dunlops on guitar because D'addarios break like crazy, Ernie Balls go dead way too fast, I don't like coated strings and other brands are too expensive.
