Boris wouldn't be the same without those cranked amps. there was one point where their stage guy came out and started messing with the amp's volume; I thought it was going to end but instead the 3 of them cranked the master volume on all of their amps and SHIT GOT REAL. my body was already vibrating before that shit.. so fucking awesome.
YES, THAT'S WHAT I MEANT: Boris is LOUD. They have to be LOUD.
I was so disappointed when i heard such low volumes.

indeed: probably beacuse i've never saw many musicians playing "slow"/droneish stuff getting so involved in it wihout getting a "ohmygodi'msoinspiredi'mstartingtomeditateaboutlifegodsmetaphysics&pizza" look (me included).
You young whippersnappers have no idea how much of a pain in the ass tinnitus can be.
Seriously, wear proper ear protections at loud concerts. You'll still feel the physical impact of loud PA (stuff vibrating, etc.).

dude thanks for this! Love that band. Surprised by their dirt arsenal though, but then again, sometimes you don't need that much. Also, the Ekospace preset on the space is insane, love that one

Your welcome buddy!
In fact Chris use a lot of the fuzz mode of his ehx muff fuzz wha/fuzz pedal after reverse delay. He doesn't use the wha function that much.
A lot of the band dirt is coming from the bass

That's cool. I think it has a lot to do with the reverb too. I mostly listen to tunnel blanket, love the dirt on little smoke and communal blood

Hahaha
Preach. It's all fun and games until you stop, then...you're old (ok, 30 this summer, not that old) and deaf like me. Playing drums in thunderous bands for five years did not serve me well. For some weird reason, we positioned the PA right behind me. My right ear is pretty fucked up. I can't hear a lot of women's voices that well, and I just miss a lot of stuff, like when my kids are crying upstairs. Just a volume/frequency I don't have access to anymore.
So now I have to crank the shit out of my car stereo to get any kind of effect. I can definitely feel it thumping me in the back of the seat, so I know it's loud as shit, but it doesn't sound loud enough. Diminishing returns. I used to have two cabs with 12"s wired into the backseat of my old VW Beetle, but some asshole broke into and stole them (along with all my CDs). Probably for the best. Most people simply could not hang with it, and made me turn down to about 40% of the volume I used. It seemed pretty badass at the time...now...
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Couldn't agree more.
I love Loud music and how you feel it in your stomach but, because of this, I started to bring/wear earplugs to every concert almost one year ago: my body gave me a few "signs" that it was time to take care of my ears. Now i'm wearing them even in the rehearsal room most of the times.

I've played drums since I was a young teen and my left ear has tinnitus because of the hi-hat being so close to it. I wish I could go back in time and tell 14 year old me to wear earplugs.
I've got it in my right ear. Constant light ringing, but when there's a lot of sounds (say I'm in a crowded restaurant), or when there's loud sounds (I'm at a concert or a football game or something), all I hear is static. It's pretty awful.
I have some light static that pops up whenever I'm in an otherwise quiet place, but I've worn earplugs pretty religiously since I started to notice it and it's been mitigated. Ringing ears is a shitty feeling anyway, so why wouldn't you grab plugs?

Also a lot of the "distortion" on the record version of Little Smoke is just people screaming bloody murder

I do. I have a pair of them with me at all times. should have mentioned that. Was just stating that tinnitus is shitty.
Saw Russian Circles last week. Was the fourth time, and it was their best show I've seen. Played two new songs and I can tell with confidence the new album is going to be awesome... Was lucky to have a buddy photographer of mine along, I asked him to snag some nice pedalboard pics so here you go...

Mike Sullivan:
you're welcome
Gibson Ripper + GK 1001RB-II / 210RBH / 115RBH + GK 400RB / Bag End S15-D / S15X-D
I hope Russian Circles does a new rig rundown. Those are such a guilty pleasure of mine, even though most are really terrible.
I sort of assume that with a 3 piece you will want to keep your gear situation extra simple because if something goes wrong it is so glaring. RC is a great example of the opposite. Stoked for the new album!
