My wife has the doors '68 European tour DVD. There was one show on there where morrison was too wasted to show up so manzarek sang the whole set. Sounded dead on like the records. Made me wonder who was actually on all those recordings...

B0N0. Probably not a controversial choice, but I don't think I saw him mentioned anywhere. Fuck I hate that voice, and all singers of his ilk that sound all epic and soaring and shit. Also the guy in Muse, he's terrible. I used to like Radiohead in my teens, but have since grown to really dislike Thom Yorke's vocals.

Stuff like Passenger, basically any singer that does that cutesy, soft-voice-from-back-of-throat thing and adds extra vowels to words (i don't know if there's a term for that (maybe epenthesis/anaptyxis, after checking)). But damn, that is the worst. So many (esp. folk-pop) singers do it nowadays.

It's funny that Jeromes Dream is mentioned in the first post of this thread, because I love that band and type of screaming/yelping. Another band with that style of vocals is/was The Spirit of Versailles, and more recently The Truth About Dreaming. I like playing that stuff for my friends and see how much they hate it/think it's ridiculous. It just sounds real and gloriously unhinged to my ears, and it's like the opposite of tough-guy hardcore vocals. Not that I necessarily dislike that, but I generally don't like vocals that sound too macho.

That being said, I'm an occasional singer myself and often hate on my own vocals. Which is why I usually just scream or talk-sing.

I take it you're a Dio fan then?
No actually! His voice is a bit pompous hair metal for me, even if he is a better singer than Ozzy. And I thought the music kinda changed in that direction a bit as well. :idk:

14 pages and not one mention of buddy from Arcade Fire. I wanna take his lunch money. Also, I thought highly enough of the Doors to lose my virginity to them. Great band. Krieger is criminally underrated.

Don't misunderstand me; screamo (or whatever you care to call it) is my favourite genre of music, and I agree with everything you just said, in principle. Just not the specific examples. I love, say, Funeral Diner and Ampere, the American, mid-2000s stuff, and "gloriously unhinged" is a great description. But the dude from Jeromes Dream was an idiot, screaming without a mic. He literally destroyed his voice just to have some indie cred, like, "Singing without a mic. Bruh. Sounded like shit but #Respect." According to SPACERITUAL he now runs an awful streetware company. I just don't know...

I don't think he was the only one either. Or the originator. Don't quote me on that because I wouldn't even know where to begin researching it, but i was quite active in that scene and remember playing with several bands that were doing it then. Also facing away from the audience was a big thing. Like nobody in the band facing anyone in the audience. Just turned around looking at the amps and the drummer. Literally every single screamo band in 2000-2002 was doing that.
