That's plenty for most people!

Nychthemeron wrote:That's what I meant. I've never felt a need for using shelving EQ, but I guess it can be useful in some situations.

Logic's EQ is so damn useful though.

Right on. I feel the same way about shelving EQ's. I guess apple introduced 64-bit Logic Pro 9.1 at NAMM so that should make those EQ's sound even better!

i just picked up an old mxr dual 15 band graphic on ebay for next to nothing!

Sweet. 15 bands should be plenty for guitar EQ applications. :thumb:

i'm actually lookin to use it to liven up whole mixes n stuff. boost certain freqs when needed. sometimes shit gets lost by the final mix.

I thought MXR just made a 5 and 10 band pedal. What's the model number for the 15 band one?

Nice! I didn't know MXR made rack mount effects. Looks like you got it for a sweet price too! Let us know how you like it.

EQs generally have three parameters. Frequency, amount of neighbouring frequencies affected (known as Q), boost/cut amount

Parametric EQ will let you choose the frequency, choose the Q, and choose the boost/cut amount

graphic EQ only lets you change the boost/cut amount... but the frequency & Q amount are already selected in the design.
the more bands on your graphic EQ, the narrower each band is.
their Q is pre-set to overlap the neighbouring bands just a bit, but not too much.
you could use a graphic EQ to make wide band boost/cuts by combining bands.
it's harder to make notches, but a 30 notch eq will have each band narrow enough that they're effective notches.
i don't know of many people who would need a notch option in a pedal. (and studio grade graphic eq typically have 30 bands)
guitar amps are not parametric
bass/mid/treble knobs are just like a 3 band graphic eq. but with knobs instead of a up/down slider like in a graphic eq.

there's no reason to hate graphic eq's so much. there isn't one build equal.
ever come across a parametric eq that had Q linear weighted?

typically the Q is log weighted & you have equal octaves on each side of the selected frequency (fraction octaves if you want)
eg: you select 440hz, and a Q of 2 octaves wide... so you affect 220hz to 880hz

but if it's linear weighted it'll have equal frequency on each side of
you select 440hz, with a Q of 2 octaves wide you affect 176Hz to 704Hz.
so the centre frequency changes as you change the Q.
(I'd say this is an example of a very poorly designed parametric EQ)
they'll never tell you in the manual either.
