I really dig the bass tone of Russian circles and young widows lately and the music I will be playing is in the same vain as that. I specificly like the sound on the song Geneva by RC. But I don't want those exact to es I just like the sound.
There are just too many choices. All thngs considered I'm still piecing together my rig so I guess
the amp has a lot to do with tones as well when choosing a pedal
true. i am into those bands and related... Pelican, Intronaut, Mouth of the Architect...
well, i reckon you have to start somewhere. the amp has a lot to do with the end product of any one tone, but i wouldn't necessarily choose a fuzz pedal based on an amp choice. get a decent amp. get a fuzz and see what tones you can come up with!
not sure if price is an important issue for you, but here are a few fuzz recommendations grouped by $. this is by no means an exclusive list, just what is coming to mind right now...
under $100 - see what happens with an Electro Harmonix Bass Big Muff. i like the BBM and find its drive tones to be usable over its entire gain range, unlike most other muffs. Guyatone TZ-2 The Fuzz. mean little pedal. i like the cutting mids and highs that can happen with it. some folks complain about low end retention... it loses a little in favor of its bright top, but not enough to my detriment.
for fuzz around $100, i recommend who you and others have mentioned - Fuzzhugger - the Great Wall and AB-Synth-(request free bass mod) are tops with bass. the Devi Ever Hyperion. Tech 21 XXL Bass Edition - some folks complain about low end with this one, but i don't find it to be an issue. the distortion has a ton of crunch in the mids and cuts like nothing else.
$150 - Wounded Paw Attack Goat. Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz V.2.
around $200 - fuzz by Dwarfcraft Devices has a distinctive chaotic character - Eau Claire Thunder, Hair of the Dog. fuzz by Wren and Cuff - Pickle Pie B - i love this fuzz. extremely well designed and built bass-specific fuzz w/clean blend. there is a wait time.
$200+ that Malekko B:assmaster box everyone keeps carrying on about.

Tortuga Yeti.
