Just emailed with John. Looks like he recommends his Basic Audio Pep Fuzz. Anyone tried it?

That's his take on the Wem-Rush Pep Box, I believe.
I haven't tried his myself, but it's a good suggestion as far as circuits go. Pretty classic 60's fuzztone -- Don't Bring Me Down by the Animals is probably the most famous example? Jump to the minute mark for the melody/lead line:
