yeah, ideally i'd like it to be able to do both. i'll give the organelle a go. i'm sure i'll be looking for excuses to mess around with it and get into the pure data thing...

That's really neat, and clever...Using IR instead of the typical ldr, so it's consistent in all lighting situations.
