Haha, I saw mudhoney about a month ago and they used my friend's band's gear. I kid you not. They brought their own pedals and guitars but they used their amps. And it was still fucking awesome.

MBV and Mudhoney in the same thread? SWEEET!
Hey, these are two of my favorite bands, so I got to get to both of the topics here:
MBV --
1) just as someone said, Shields uses "banks" of pedals at a time - he treats a group as if it were one effect, so that is why he uses so freaking many.
2) On the MBV records, Shields didn't really use much in the way of pedals at all. He used pretty much delay, reverse reverb, and amp distortion (check out his interview on SOFT FOCUS). I believe that most of his effects on records come from rack units, not stompboxes.
I chalk up his insane pedal usage now to the inability to recreate all of his sounds "on demand" live from amps alone. (and he's just a gearhead like you and me
)
3) Has anyone else noticed that every Devi pedal he has (and he has all of them) has EVERY knob cranked as far as it can go? DAMN.
Mudhoney:
I've seen them recently as well, and all I can say is MUFF, MUFF...and MUFF. Got to appreciate a band who just keeps it real. And "hard on for war" is the best song ever.

I noticed in those two J mascis pics...
The RRR got booted for a RV-5
I guess he needs his spring reverb

I've always loved that tape arrow on the volume pedal
