Granular processing stuff in pedals, apps, and PC software seems to be the latest bleeding edge, although a bit of old hat to people other than guitarists. The Flux:FX iOS app looks like the bomb for some granular and beyond action.

Oh I agree! Digital still does suck when done cheaply. But there aren't really that many innovators out there right now utilizing digital effects other than on the PC. It's kind of sad. It's kind of like the tube vs solid state argument. Solid State has advanced to the point where you can almost not tell the difference in some brands. But others have done very well with tubes. The issue with tubes is, maintenance. With a solid state head, what maintenance is required other than the occasional air duster? You move a tube amp wrong or too hard, you're in for a whole world of hurt potentially. I have an all tube amp too. LOL. But I've still yet to see that huge difference other than OMG tubes.

For example. Boss just came out with some "killer" new synth unit. It sounds like the 1980's. Why would anyone want that? It's not progressive. It's not forward thinking or new. It's literally recreating the shit soundscapes that were created in the 80's. THE WORST DECADE EVAR.

i'd agree that it's silly how many redo'ings there are out there, i think there are some nifty things. the amount of control/device control options the H9 has, how many odd combos you can do with the Strymies and a DMC, deliciously weird stuff you can get into running into a laptop running Live and some soft synth effects, a lot of what the Hot Hand Source Audio folks get into......

I know that iOS potential is already in everyone's pocket, but what I am looking to is the same movement that occurred with synthesizers and sampling in the past five years.
I am an Elektron user, and I see people come and go from the Elektron community so they can stop with the software. A lot of folks are drawn to the Octatrack as an "Ableton in a box" hardware mechanism, which works out to be true for some but not all.
There is a tremendous amount of potential for DAW and CPU based audio manipulation, but a lot of folks don't want that. I don't. And I don't want to menu dive and I don't want to software update and I don't want to pay for algorithms.
I just want to see something fresh. That looks like a guitar pedal. That I can watch a few youtubes of, read about on ILF, then get on the motherfucking Internet and buy with American dollars. Something with a "stampede" or "reverse cowgirl" function.

Hah! Between the GR303 emulations in the recent hex pickup stuff and now the SY synth, a lot of people are thrilled, just rock-hard-boner thrilled, to be able to nail vintage Metheney cheese tones. Just horrible shit. Which is fucking sad, given that there's a fuckload more that you can do with those boxes that doesn't just sound like retreads of history. There are multi oscillator synths in those boxes that can do fuckloads more gnarly, interesting, weird, or mysterious sounds. This is about Boss/Roland giving into nostalgia via preset and user error on the part of those who get boners over those presets instead of realizing that we're 40 years into the future now.jwar wrote:For example. I disagree. Like a LOT. LOL. I've only had one issue with a solid state amp not handling pedals well (it still did it but just not to my liking!) and it was a cheap POS. But in general I've found the complete opposite of what you're saying. Now I will says tube amps add a different flavor to it that I like. Don't get me wrong, I love my Mesa Bass Prodigy. I've actually played tube guitar amps that were so over powering that they literally destroyed the entire tone of every pedal being fed into. Cough Bad Cat COUGH. Never ever had that issue with a SS.

Control is getting hugely exciting lately. The modular Renaissance and the similar ideas that have occupied digital space like MAX, PD, and so on, are giving us crazy ways to make the old new again. Using LFOs to freak shit out and make it glitch, make parameters and their oscillators interactive, sequencing parameters, and live manipulation, man. At this point I'm a bit more interested in control to manipulate sounds I already have access to than adding new sounds. I'm looking at the EHX 8-Step, Arturia Beatstep Pro, and Source Audio Reflex as devices that could open up some of my CV and MIDI equipped boxes in big ways.
