Crover remains, probably, the most impressively restrained drummer I've ever seen live.
Emil Amos is rad too, but I'm such a sucker for that style of drumming that he might be terrible and I'd still think it was gold.

Re: Favorite Doom style Drummers..
Ryan from Windhand is one of my favorite drummers in doom. It's been that way since I saw him play on the first Facedowninshit tour. Travis from Yob is better now than he ever was.
Tight and hard hitting are my main requirements. And no overplaying. I doubt it will happen but I'm hoping whoever drums in my next band doesn't use double bass. Speaking of which, is another one of my favorite things about Ryan from Windhand.

Nice. I enjoyed the read there RoadBull. Those little touches to their playing is somewhat what I'm looking for. A tight but loose style. Without having to make every hit on the quarter note or match every single guitar notation. That there is my definition of rigid and mechanical. Drives me nuts. Especially when we're playing a Slow and Heavy Groove.

Matt Wood from Bison/Haggatha is without a doubt the most entertaining.
Agreed on the double kick. That shit sucks. My drummer uses it all the god damn time and it's fucking aggravating. He says that's where his rhythm comes from, ugh. Glad I'm starting to work with someone else, he's just learning but he has the right attitude and single kick pedal.

Aaron Harris is where its at. Dude isn't technical but plays in the right place every time. He has the heaviest drum fills but they are so stupid simple. His playing on Celestial and Oceanic are some of the best drumming ever.

I have no problem with double kick, but it goes back to my saying about "just because you can, does not mean you should"

Re: Favorite Doom style Drummers..
It really comes down to what the song calls for and the band's style. Often there are drummers that are holding it down and doing their job.
Then there is how WE hear it. That will vary depending on who's ears are doing the listening. Fie instance, I am sure many here love High on Fire. I am also sure that many love the drumming. It doesn't do much for me. That is just a taste thing of course. For me its just TOO straight ahead, sounding good for a few songs, then gets exhausting. That's not to say that I prefer the polar opposite. But to me I like to imagine what I, or some other drummer might play given the same song. Or situations on the other end of the spectrum. I might like bands Luke Mastodon a bit more with a drummer playing more straight ahead. Its pretty situational, and being able to read the song and determining what is called for is sometimes what sets apart good from great in terms of drummers, songs, and bands.

Re: Favorite Doom style Drummers..
it took me actually seeing EHG live to understand how much Joey's drumming made that band. He was loose but not sloppy, had groove but it was still heavy and not some bbq sauce boogie rock shit. So yeah him. I love watching Emil Amos play too, I don't think his drumming would work in a standard 'doom' band but given all the space in Om songs it's awesome.
One of my favourite lesser known guys was Emil, the first drummer in Whitehorse. Just really solid, nothing fancy.

Keko the former drummer from Weedeater is probably one of my favorites. Pure power.

Yea Mastodon with straight ahead drumming would be awful. That's why I honestly don't care for anything after Remission. Leviathan was the most stripped down drumming and I just didn't care for it, whole album is boring. Blood Moutain and Crack The Skye I enjoy cause the drumming is better but I've only listening to each a few times. Don't give a shit about the Hunter didn't even bother after the single I heard. Didn't listen to the new one at all and have no interest to do so.

Re: Favorite Doom style Drummers..
i often think it takes a better drummer to play slow than it does to play fast. or at least, a lot of drummers i've known were good at playing fast before they were good at playing slow. and a lot of amazing fast drummers just aren't any good at real slow music. if it's overplayed it sounds stupid and silly and makes no sense. if it's underplayed it's really boring. and the sense of timing has to be very precise. if the beat is just a hair off for two or three beats in a fast blast beat part and then everyone catches up, most people won't notice or if they do it's not that big of a deal. if you're a hair off on two or three beats in a really slow song with a beat only occurring every few seconds then it sounds like total shit, is really noticeable and can sound like a pretty long stretch of song is really fucked up. you have to be really tight, at the right level, with a really refined taste for your fills and whatnot. takes a lot of drummers a long time to get there.
i agree with these statements. i do love double bass in the right kind of music. but in most slow to mid paced doom it's usually unnecessary. i think it's appropriate for a lot of what we do in my band, but one of the things i struggle with most with our drummer (aside from him occasionally saying incredibly stupid things into the microphone in metal voice) is him overplaying on slow parts. the last year has been really good for him getting much tighter and better as a drummer, and laying off the metal voice and commentary in general. and it seems he has just recently really started to come around to the virtues of restraint as a drummer. we're still working on it though. you've met him, restraint isn't exactly his strong suit in drumming or in life. i really struggled with his sloppiness for a while, but he's actually gotten a lot more serious about being a good drummer and the difference in our live shows has really been noticeable.
this is true. this dude is really like nothing else i've ever seen.
even though he does use the double bass here and there, i would say dino from asunder is one of my favorite doom drummers. really tight, well accented and musical drumming without being too flashy.
